Mind, Body, Soul
To
Nuke or No??
By Mona Lease
Greetings, Gals!! Warmer weather is here!! Today is May 1st...or...May
Day! Around the world are May Day celebrations replete with fine foods,
fine music, games, and Nature, herself, awakening and bursting with
deepening, vibrant colors.
Some dance around a chosen tree to celebrate "fecundity"...new growth
of crops and trees, abundance of offspring - animal and human, and
fertility...of their community. Later...the tree was called a May Pole.
May Day customs include:
Neighbors leave a basket of flowers on each other's doorstep.
Children can go barefoot for the first time.
People crown a "May Day Queen" for the day's festivities.
Beekeepers move their bees on May 1st.
Fishermen expect to catch fish on May 1st.
On May Day morning, if a maiden gathers dew before sunup and
sprinkles it on her face, she will enjoy luck and
youthful beauty
for the rest of the year.
Farmers often plant corn, cucumbers, and turnips on this day.
Villagers may hold theatrical battles between "summer" and
"winter" that banish the winter.
The Kentucky Derby starts off the month of May (first Saturday of
the month).
On May 1st, people in Britain welcome spring by "Bringing in the
May" or gathering cuttings of flowers for their
homes.
May 1st in Hawaii is called "Lei Day" and people receive prizes this
day for wearing the prettiest handmade Lei (flower
necklace). - The Old Farmer's Almanac
The Brief Origins of May Day: At it's national convention in Chicago,
held in 1884, the "Federation of Trades and Labor Unions" (which later
became the American Federation of Labor), proclaimed that "eight hours
shall constitute a legal day's labor from and after May 1, 1886."

doorsteps...and I don't know where most of you live - I'll leave you
with the following.
9 Foods That Chefs Never Put in the Microwave - Insider..Taylor
Tobin...April 12, 2019
ii There are some things you just shouldn't put in the microwave.
ii Pizza is better heated in the oven.
ii Eggs are best on the stove.
As it turns out, some dishes fare better in the microwave than others.
From a poll of pro chefs to find out which items they consistently
avoid heating in the microwave - the following nine items are those you
want to keep far from the microwave.
1) When heated in the microwave, puff pastry loses it's signature flaky
texture. Whether store bought or homemade, flaky puff pastry isn't your
best bet for the microwave.
2) To keep your pizza crusts crispy and cheese melty, use an oven or
cast-iron skillet for reheating purposes. The double whammy is
microwaved pizza delivers a rubbery, tough outer crust and a soggy,
limp center. The best way to reheat pizza is in a hot skillet,
preferably cast-iron, until the bottom (of the pizza) is hot and
beginning to crisp. Then cover it for a minute or two to allow the
cheese to melt.
3) Microwave warming will leave you with dry, crumbly bagels. Never
microwave bagels. Microwaves work by reheating water molecules inside a
food item. If you reheat bread items, the microwave takes out all of
the moisture. Reheat your bagels in the toaster.
4) A perfect quiche requires a delicate touch...you won't find inside
the microwave. Quiche is the simplest dish you can make. Microwaving
(to reheat) gives you a soft crust, not flaky. Because of the eggs in
this dish..quiche does not fare well in the microwave.
5) In fact, Don't microwave eggs at all!!
6) Heating halibut in the microwave leeches away the fish's succulent
moisture. Certain fishes - like halibut - don't withstand the
microwave's concentrated heat very well.
7) Steak deserves more TLC than you can achieve by sticking it in the
microwave. Don't reheat steak in the microwave!! That first bite should
be salty, juicy, fatty, and rich with flavor. The microwave takes this
from you....and the steak.
8) Don't compromise your soft taco's texture by microwaving it. Chefs
warn: Reheating "street tacos" in the microwave gives you a hard
tortilla outside and a mushy inside filling. Use the oven to reheat
tacos.
9) The microwave won't consistently heat baby formula, resulting in the
potential for mouth burns. The Mayo Clinic recommends placing a full
bottle in a bowl of warm water and allowing it to set for a few minutes
until it is lukewarm to the touch.
Happy May Day, readers!!
The best is yet to be!!
