Airplanes
and Such

Greetings, Gals!! I found the following most interesting. I certainly
would have expected better. Keep your goals in front of you. Portion
control with food, gals. We've only got 8 weeks until April Fools' Day!!
18 Things You Should Never Do On an Airplane - Juliana LaBianca, Tyler
Kendall, Reader's Digest
Traveling is stressful enough so let's not add getting sick from the
flight to your itinerary. Experts reveal where the germs are hiding and
how to stay healthy.
1)Please! Don't Walk Around Barefoot. Flight attendants have
seen everything from vomit to blood to spilled food hit that carpet.
Don't walk to the bathroom barefooted. Glasses get dropped in the
galley. Don't walk barefooted there...there could be broken glass that
was missed.
2)Skip the Ice in Your Drink. An EPA study in 2004 found that
out of 327 aircraft's water supplies, only 15% passed health standards.
Since the 2009 creation of the EPA's Aircraft Drinking Rule Act,
standards have risen. Most airplanes don't serve drinking water from
the tap, but their ice cubes are often still made from the same water.
Water tanks on airplanes are old. They've been tested and bacteria is
in them.
3)Don't Sit in Your Seat the Entire Flight. On an airplane,
you're at a higher altitude and at an increased risk for deep vein
thrombosis (DVT), which is a type of blood clot that usually forms in
your legs. DVT is coined "economy class syndrome" and walking around
for a few minutes or standing up to stretch are good bets to help
prevent it. Avoid tight clothing. The important thing is to move around
or move your legs at least once every hour. If you can't get up, lift
alternate knees to your chest and twist in your seat from side to side.
4)Ditch Your Contact Lenses. Wear glasses in-flight. The air in
the cabin is very dry and could result in irritation to your eyes.
5)Don't Turn Off the Air Vent Over Your Seat. If the air blowing
makes you chilly, throw on a sweatshirt. Doctors recommend that the air
should be set at medium or high over your seat so that any airborne
germs are blown away from you.
6)Don't Eat Food After it's Fallen on the Tray Table. The tray
table doesn't get sterilized between flights. During flights, people
have put their feet on them and changed a baby's diaper on them, etc.
7)Don't Use the Blankets. Blankets and pillows are recycled from
flight to flight and often don't get properly washed until the end of
the day.
8)Don't Forget to Stay Hydrated. Airplane cabins are known for
their low humidity because they are made to mimic the highest altitude
at which humans can breathe...usually 6,000 to 8,000 feet. For every
leg of your flight, the attendants drink a full 16 ounces of water.
9)Opt Out of Coffee or Tea. Don't drink coffee or tea. It is
usually made from the tap water of the airplane. Also, caffeine will
dehydrate you.
10)Don't Booze Too Much. Alcohol is extremely dehydrating. The effects
of alcohol hit you harder and faster in the thin air of a plane.
11)Don't Touch the Flush Button in the Bathroom. Wash your hands
thoroughly and use a paper towel to flush the toilet and open the door.
12)Don't Fall Asleep Against the Window. You're not the only one who
has had their head pressed against that wall. Rule of thumb: Never put
your hands in your mouth or near your face.
13)Don't Wear Shorts. The seats aren't cleaned between flights. You
have to assume most surfaces on a plane are no cleaner and not as clean
as similar public places.
14)Don't Feel Embarrassed to Tell a Flight Attendant You're Not Feeling
Well. Your health and safety are not an inconvenience. Flight
attendants are trained to help with medical emergencies and childbirth
before they get their certification.
15)Get Stuck with the Middle Seat. Set a free alert on expertflyer.com
to boost your chances of getting your desired seat.
16)Don't Neglect Your AM Skin Care. Pilots flying for an hour got the
same radiation as being in a tanning bed.
17)Don't Fall Asleep Before Take-off. This makes it harder to equalize
the pressure in your ears. Chew gum to speed up this process.
18)Don't Guzzle Soda. Increasing altitude can cause intestinal gas to
expand 30%. Keep your stomach settled with bottled water.

can't solve your problems. Just knowing there is someone who cares can
make all the difference." - sun.gazing.com
