Along Life’s Way
Life Choices
By Lois E. Wilson
As we proceed through our lives, in most situations we encounter a
range of choices from bad to good. We usually have control over making
these choices, and each choice is likely to have a consequence. The
groups that favor elective abortions call themselves “pro-choice”
advocates. I am strongly in favor of pro-choice too, but my choices are
different. Some ranges to consider are below:
Casual sex---------------------------------Wait until marriage
No
protection-----------------------------Some type of contraception
Abort a pregnancy-----------------------Carry the child to full term
Keep
and support the child-------------See that it is adopted by a loving
family
If a woman is responsible and makes the best choices, she will not have
to make the choice that ends the life of her developing child. In the
case of rape, she should seek immediate care for emergency
contraception. It should be noted that if a woman chooses an
induced abortion, legally the biological father has little or no choice
in the matter.
Unfortunately, over the years our government has created programs that
work against the stability of families that consist of mothers,
fathers, and children. When I was teaching at the college level,
I overheard a conversation between two female students. One was
telling the other how, by being a single parent, with each child she
received additional government benefits. The focus of programs should
be to encourage families to keep fathers in the home.
In the U.S. in 2014, there were approximately 926,200 abortions
performed. This was down from the 1.06 million in 2011. According to
the study, twelve percent of the 2014 abortion patients were
adolescents, white patients accounted for 39%, black patients for 28%,
Hispanics for 25%, and those of other races and ethnicities for 9%.
To me, the most important aspect of the abortion controversy is that
the in-womb child has no say in the matter. Ronald Reagan noted,
“Everyone who is for abortion has already been born.”
I think about the Biblical scriptures wherein the angel tells the
Virgin Mary that she is God’s choice to have a child by the Holy
Spirit. It was an unexpected situation for her. Informed of her
pregnancy, Joseph did not reject her, but married her. They nurtured
the child in their family, and Jesus changed the world.
Shouldn’t we be questioning: What wonderful children is God sending us
today? Shouldn’t His gifts be embraced and loved? Has He already sent
us those who would cure cancer, other deadly diseases, or bring lasting
peace? Have they been discarded for convenience? Hope lies in God’s
gifts. Let our choice be the gift God gave to us—life.
