What the Senior
Scribes scholarships have meant to me
By Jordan Pridemore
I received the very first scholarship from the Senior Scribes. I was,
of course, incredibly grateful at the time. In part because I am always
astounded when people reach out so kindly and partly because I was just
beginning to comprehend the enormous financial burden of college.
Now, I am in a position that allows me to fully understand the full
gravity of what the Senior Scribe does for young people. I teach now,
in what is considered an inner city school of about 3,000 high school
students. I teach writing to juniors and seniors. Many of them have
children of their own, parents in prison. They come to school hungry or
often, not at all.
The encouragement and support I received from people like the Senior
Scribes made my college experience possible. That's all I needed to
earn my degree: people who believed I could do it. I see everyday what
happens when young people don't have anyone to believe in them. And
that compounds my gratitude and appreciation for the kind people in
Darke County who are willing to go the extra mile to make a difference
in a child's life.
