ARCANUM- It’s not every game, the home team is given an added advantage.
The home court advantage is often enough. Monday, the advantage came in
the form of fire alarms.
With the Lady Trojans trailing 12-8 in the opening game of the night,
the alarms went off through out the school. Not knowing what the
problem was in the newly built school, it was ordered the school be
cleared out until it was resolved.
The disruption may have been enough to throw Houston off as the Trojans
came from behind to take the opener 25-23.
It wasn’t enough to throw the Wildcats off the rest of the night.
Houston won the next three games, 25-19, 25-17 and 25-21 to send the
Trojans record to 2-2 on the year.
“This was our first match in the new gym and we might have had a case
of the jitters,” Arcanum coach Terri Day said. “I was thrilled with the
way we came out and played but we couldn’t finish.”
After winning the matches opening game, Arcanum came out like a ball of
fire in the next three games.
Building leads of 12-9 in the second, 11-5 in the third and 13-9 in
game four, Arcanum would never be able to hold those leads as Houston
would go on late game runs, overtaking the Trojans and posting wins and
winning the match.”
“We have a very small team in numbers so the girls know they are on the
spot without a lot of options,” Day pointed out. “We had some bad
passing, serve-receive and communications. Stuff we can work on without
a problem.”
One of those problems was sets.
“We had too many sets that were too far from the net,” Day said. “We
have a problem with setting off the net and having to save too many
balls versus putting some balls down. That’s going to come with
practice. I’ve got some young setters on junior varsity working at it.”
Trailing 22-17 in the opening game, Arcanum started to put things
together. After breaking serve, the Trojans offense went to work.
Getting points from senior Morgan Buck, Arcanum gained its first lead
of the game, 23-22.
With things knotted 23-23, the final two points came off serves from
junior Brooke Allen with a huge kill being recorded by junior Allison
Dill.
“We have to forget about tonight and get ready for Twin Valley South on
Thursday,” Day said in conclusion.
The Trojans are 2-2 on the season and will open Cross County Conference
plat Thursday against the Panthers.
