Wave drops home opener

GREENVILLE -  All Valley View needed was one goal. The Spartans got four.

It was a case of one missed opportunity after another Monday as Greenville fell to Valley View 4-0 in the Wave’s season opening soccer match.

“We lost focus and we lost our composure,” said Wave coach Brent DeVoss. “We let them get into us mentally and that led to some very un-smart fouls and penalties that cost us some time and scoring opportunities. We gave up some sloppy goals but we had our chances.”

Missed chances to score kept the Wave out of the net and off the scoreboard.

With the opportunities being there, Greenville’s biggest chance came with just over seven minutes left in the game. With a wide open net to shoot at, the Wave attempt went wide left of the goal, helping to preserve the Spartan shutout.

“The inability to finish,” said DeVoss. “I take the blame for that. It all comes down to practice. Practice, practice, practice. We have to focus on that this week. We have Miamisburg coming in here Saturday and that is a conference (GWOC) game. We are going to have to be prepared.”

It didn’t take Valley View long to get on the board as the Wave defense broke down early. With less than five minutes gone, Spartan senior Juan Nova put the game winner on the board to make it a 1-0 lead.

Valley View would score again at the 23:18 mark on a goal off the foot of Greg Freziel.

The Spartans would add two more goals in the second half to preserve the victory.

“We broke down on defense,” DeVoss said. “We didn’t fly to the ball the way we should have. We were reacting and not being proactive. We didn’t anticipate the way we should have. If you’re standing on defense, find a shirt. If you’re on offense, find a space. We failed to do that and we limited ourselves on scoring opportunities. If we play Saturday, the way we played tonight, we will be 0-2 and that’s hard to recover from.”

The Wave junior varsity fell 6-2. Falling behind 2-0 early, Greenville gained a 2-2 score with 10:10 remaining. Valley View scored four timed in the final 10 minutes to gain the edge.
