NEW MADISON- After dropping losses on Tri-Village and Arcanum, only one
team stood in the way of Greenville in the 8th Annual Darke County
Volleyball Tournament Saturday.
Mississinawa Valley.
The Blackhawks had already gotten past Bradford and Ansonia and were
looking to upend the Wave for the title.
That didn’t happen.
In a match that should have gone the distance (3 games) Greenville, led
by Kelsey Testor (MVP) topped the Hawks in two with scores of 25-20 and
25-23.
“We stepped it up a notch today,” said Wave coach Leslie Hoelscher.
“We’ve had trouble getting them motivated to playing up to their own
level during scrimmages.
“They had an incentive to win today. We are having a huge pizza party
on Tuesday,” Hoelscher said laughing. “Some of our girls played with
the MV girls so there was a little bit of a personnel agenda out there
today.”
Not looking all that good in the pre-season, Hoelscher noticed a few
positive things she had been wanting to see.
“It looked like we were coming together and getting excited,” Hoelscher
stated. “I finally saw some heart out there. They meshed well today.
The communication stepped up as did their energy level. They wanted to
win.”
While Mississinawa Valley never held a lead in either game, the Hawks
did push Greenville at times.
In the opening game, MV never trailed by more than six points and
closed the gap to a 15-13 count midway through the contest.
In game two, the Hawks trailed by a mere point several times only to
fall by two.
“Our net play was good. We have some smart girls on the front row,”
Hoelscher admitted. “Our serve receive has been up and down up to this
point but we had a good day today. They stepped it up back there and
made good passes to my setter for sets. The girls took it all out on
the court like I’ve been asking them to do today.”
Mississinawa Valley coach Scott was unavailable for comment.
Placing third in the tournament was Arcanum with Ansonia fourth while
host T-V , Franklin Monroe and Bradford rounded out the field of seven.
Versailles did not take part in the tournament.
Greenville will see action again on the 31st at Troy while the Hawks
will travel to Ft. Recovery on Tuesday.
