Fisherback stepping her game up

GREENVILLE- When Jordyn Fisherback was pitching at Tri-Village, she was the best in the Cross County Conference. She wanted more, so she transferred to Greenville and played for Jarrod Newland.

Wanting to pitch against the best was her goal and playing for a state caliber coach was going to get her where she wanted to ultimately be. Now at Middle Tennessee State, Fisherback is getting ready for her sophomore softball season.

As a freshman for the Lady Raiders, Fisherback was the starting pitcher at MTSU.

“As a freshman, I started but I eventually got pulled,” Fisherback said. “In high school, I could miss a spot and get by with it but not at college so I learned my lesson the hard way and in the end I learned a lot and I adjusted. As a team, we struggled. I got hurt but it was a eye opener and I learned a lot by watching the other kids pitch.”

“Adjusting was the biggest part for me,” said Fisherback. “In high school, the first couple of hitters were tough and then it slacked off. At this level, everyone can hit so you can’t miss a spot at all.”

Going from Patriot Nation to Greenville, Fisherback was groomed in many ways for the university experience.

“In high school, we took the road trips for a week-end or four days starting on a Thursday,” Fisherback said. “On those trips, coach Newland made sure we had our study time so coach prepared me a lot. He’s a very good coach and he ran the program like a small collage. So it prepared me for stepping into the big time softball scene. He was hard on me but it helped me out a lot.

“I had a stress fracture in my right arm from pitching a lot as a freshman,” Fisherback continued. “I am still recovering from that but hopefully, I’ll be ready in February. The season starts on the 17th and my arm is still a little sore but I’m ready to start throwing again.”

Middle Tennessee State is a member of the Sun Belt Conference and has some excellent competition in it.

Fisherback is working hard to rehab her arm to be ready for the 2012 season.

As a freshman, Fisherback appeared in 24 games including 16 starts from the circle. She threw 107.1 innings of work for a 7-8 record, amassing a 4.63 ERA and 74 strikeouts and made her first career start on February 13 against Murray State ... Threw 6.0 innings on Feb. 19 in a no decision versus Georgia Southern, allowing just one earned run off six hits ... Earned first career win against Georgia Southern on Feb. 20, allowing no runs off six hits ... Threw first complete-game win on Feb. 25 against Marshall, giving up one earned run off seven hits while striking out a career-high nine batters ... Defeated Bowling Green on March 8 ... Earned back-to-back wins on March 18 and 23, beating Jacksonville State and North Texas ... Pitched a complete-game shutout on March 29 against FAU, allowing four hits and striking out five ... Struck out six on April 2 in a victory over South Alabama in which she allowed just one run off four hits.
