win of the season

ARCANUM - With Christmas day fast approaching, both Arcanum and
Mississinawa Valley had visions Friday night. Visions of victories
dancing in their respective heads.
Coming off an impressive win over Bradford, the Blackhawks wanted to
made it two in a row. Arcanum just wanted to get its first of the year.
Give the nod to the Trojans.
Led by a 24 point performance by senior Mitch Brown, Arcanum got off
the bleachers and into the win column Friday posting a 61-42 Cross
County Conference victory over the visiting Hawks.
“We felt very good about coming into tonight’s game and MV was coming
in off a big win over Bradford so they were up and ready to play,” said
Arcanum coach Brian Gunter. “I liked what we did offensively in the
fact we took good game shots and the way we played defense. We did a
good job against their dribble penetration and holding them to one look
at times.”
Mississinawa Valley tallied 19 turnovers on the night. Arcanum turned
11 of those into 22 points.
“That’s how you win games,” Gunter stated. “If you can get these kind
of points in transition and be able to capitalize on mistakes, you win
games. We did a great job on defense tonight.
“Mitch had a great ball game. He’s a good ball player,” Gunter added.
“Mitch ran the team tonight from the point and he knew when to pick his
spots for shots and he got everybody involved. Garno (Brady) ended up
with 16 there so together they had 40 points and that’s just good
basketball. We want to come into every game thinking we can run and get
shots out of our offense like we did tonight.”
On the downside for the Trojans, 18 miscues.
“That is a concern for us,” Gunter said. “We had quite a few there at
the end and I want to finish strong. That was a concern and I addressed
that. We need to do a better job of taking care of the ball.”
For Mississinawa Valley coach, it was a hard pill to swallow.
“We need to be more consistent and I know I have said this before,”
said Hawks coach Jason Burkholder. “We had way too many mistakes. I
have talked about being young and inexperienced but we are seven or
eight games into the season now. We are not inexperienced anymore.”
The Hawks started the second quarter on a 4-0 run, closing the gap to a
4-0 spurt but it was Arcanum that finished it on a 19-4 blitz to end
the half up 30-14.
“We just lost focus a little bit,” said Burkholder. “We didn’t dictate
the tempo whatsoever and that was one of my keys to the game. We were
chasing a lot and letting them dictate a lot.”
Arcanum will be in action tonight in the Jet Tournament against
Tri-Village while the Hawks will be idle until Thursday when they will
play at Union High School in the Border Wars Tournament.
