NEW MADISON - “Matt Werner doesn’t do a lot of scoring but he is a good
point guard and he protects the ball well.”
Those were the words of Tri-Village coach Josh Sagester after
Tri-Village topped Greenville Saturday.
Tuesday against Twin Valley South, Werner made Sagester eat those words
and the Patriot was happy to do it.
Led by a 21 point performance from Kyle Pipenger, it was the play and
scoring ability of Werner that made the difference in the Patriots
50-45 win over Cross County Conference rival Twin Valley South.
Werner made several defense plays that took the ball out of the
Panthers hands and on one play, Werner made a steal, went to the bucket
and scored two of his 17, breaking a 33-33 tie in the third quarter.
“We knew he (Werner) was going to get the opportunity to do some
scoring tonight because of the tri-angle defense South was playing,”
said Sagester. “We have a lot of guys with different weapons. Shade
(Brubaker) only gets two and he kept his composure in that tri-angle
and that gave Matt his opportunities.”
Knowing what was coming before game time, Werner went to Sagester.
“He told me before the game, ‘coach, I’ve got ya’,” Sagester said. “I
told him I hope so. He said at half-time ‘coach, they are going to go
in’. I said, God I hope so. So he had enough confidence to step up and
make those shots. He’s a winner. Defensively, he was a pest and played
an all around great game.”
Even though the score kept the Patriots undefeated on the season and
sent South down to its first defeat, things didn’t get off to a great
start.
At the end of the first quarter, the Pats held a slim 11-8 advantage.
At the break, it was the Panthers who held a 23-20 lead.
“In the second quarter, our bigs (big guys) got into foul trouble,”
Sagester pointed out. “We gave Meyers (Johnny) 12 points in the second
and I told the kids we can’t give him 12 more. My bigs held him to two
free throws in the second half so we did a good job on him.”
Back and forth the whole game, the Patriots held a 38-36 lead heading
into the final stanza.
Although the Panthers would never re-gain the lead, the Patriots would
never lead by more than six points the whole night as South would give
Tri-Village fits.
“South never let up,” Sagester said. “We would cut off the inside and
the coaches kid would nail a 20 footer. We would go from a five point
lead to two.”
Now 6-0, the Patriots will play at Tri-County North Friday.

Monday night action
ARCANUM – The Arcanum Lady Trojans are showing signs of improvement.
Getting back to the fundamentals, Arcanum coach Racheal Fearon is
seeing the signs she wants to see.
Monday night, Arcanum welcomed the Brookville Lady Blue Devils. Arcanum
put up a strong effort but fell to Brookville 39-25.
Brookville put together runs of 14 and 10 points to salt the game away
as Arcanum put on a late game push in a effort to pull off the upset.
