If it was defense you were looking for Thursday night at Versailles,
well you were in the wrong place.
For the first time in recent memory the Lady Tigers exploded
offensively, putting up 76 points in a 76-60 win over Parkway. The win
improves the Tigers to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in MAC play. It also marked
a coming out party for the offense, which has struggled at times this
season.
“It has been awhile since I have seen us put up that many points and I
would have been dumbfounded if you had told me before the game it was
going to happen,” said Coach Jacki Stonebraker.
Team point totals weren’t the only thing surprising the Tigers.
Sophomore guard Rachel Kremer tallied a team high 23 points and Amanda
Winner added 17 in the winning effort. It has been some time since the
Tigers have seen that type of individual scoring.
“Every game it has been one of the girls, but tonight it was all of
them,” said Stonebraker. “I think it is becoming pretty clear that
those two are our main offensive threats.”
Taking a look at the stats it isn’t hard to see how Versailles tallied
the 76 points, going 30 of 56 from the floor for 53 percent. Most of
the missed shots came from behind the arch, as Versailles was almost
automatic in and around the paint.
Yet, when the game started it was Parkway who stormed out of the gate,
going 7 of 7 and taking a 15-6 lead midway through the first period.
But like a spring snow, as the game wore on the lead melted away and
the Tigers took control.
It started in the first period when the Tigers outscored the Panthers
9-0 tying the game at 15-15 after one period of play. The offensive
onslaught continued in the second period as Versailles continued to
push forward.
However, Parkway did respond and it was just 30-24 Versailles after one
half of play.
In the third period with Winner in some foul trouble, Chloe Warvel
picked up the slack hitting for six points, answering any Parkway
challenge. Although the Panthers made some noise, their defense gave
back everything the offense gained.
As the teams headed towards the final period Versailles held a 51-42
lead and poised to take over the game. One of the biggest spearheads
was the fact the Tigers controlled the boards, cleaning up any missed
Parkway shots and converting on second opportunities.
“We were really able to control the boards and convert on
opportunities,” said Stonebraker.
The Tigers were able to take a double digit fourth period lead and take
over the game from there. Just like the previous three, Parkway made a
few runs but each time Versailles swatted them away. When the buzzer
ended the game, Versailles was up 76-60 and 3-2 on the season.
Versailles travels to Arcanum Saturday where they face off against the
Lady Trojans.
