College tennis
tournament set for February
by Joe Cogliano
Saturday, November 12, 2011
The Dayton area will play host to four colleges -- including the Air
Force Academy -- for a men’s tennis tournament in February.
Dayton Center Courts on Salem Avenue is also bringing in teams from
West Point, Ball State University and Lipscomb University.
The free event, which includes 12 matches over two days, is expected to
draw several hundred people to the region.
It will be a homecoming for Air Force sophomore Andy Jackson, a
Vandalia Butler High School grad, who lead the team with 27 overall
wins in his first year. Jackson’s family owns and operates the courts
and his father, Larry, has coached Butler’s boys tennis team for the
past six years.
The region already has a rich history with professional tennis
tournaments, such as the Western & Southern Open tennis tournament
in Warren County that brings in close to $25 million in economic impact
for the Southwest Ohio region, including parts of the Dayton area. That
makes it one of the largest boosts to the region’s economy from a
single sporting event.
