HEBRON- Due to Scioto Downs now having slot machines for gambling, the
OHSAA decided to make a change in the scene for the state cross country
race.
National Trail Raceway is now the new home for the big race and
Versailles junior Sam Prakel had little trouble with the new course,
completing the race in 15:19.34 to win the coveted state title.
Prakel’s time was the fastest boys time of the day, five seconds ahead
of the second place finisher.
Through the majority of the race, Prakel stayed with the pack, breaking
away in the last quarter mile.
As a team, the Tigers could only muster a ninth place finish overall as
the state title was won by McDonald High School with 74 points with
Independence coming home in second (118) and Mariemont third (138).
In the girls D-III race, two time defending state champion Tammy Berger
ran the 5K course in 18:51.50 to finish fifth, while the Lady Tigers
came in fourth overall.
Liberty Center won the girls D-III crown with 65 points while Coldwater
was second scoring 85 points. West Liberty-Salem tallied 111 points and
a third place finish.
