BRADFORD - On a crisp cool night at Warner Field, Bradford crowned the
2011 Royalty with the honors going to Queen Chelsea Broughman and King
Austin Sell just prior to a heartbreaking 27-20 loss to Miami East.
Bradford opened the game by kicking to the visiting Vikings. Miami East
put together a drive and scored on their first possession. Bradford
struggled with the Vikings defense and was forced to punt on its first
possession. The first quarter ended with Miami East leading 7-0.
The Vikings moved the ball in the second quarter on the ground and in
the air until the first turnover of the game with Bradford recovering a
Miami East fumble. Bradford ran two plays for little gain when
sophomore Brandon Wysong went to the air to find Dylan Canan who took
it to the end zone to tie the game.
Miami East put together another drive until Brandon Wirrig intercepted
to give Bradford possession on its own 35 yard line. Three plays later
Jonathon Barbee carried for a 20 yard gain, followed by a Canan 15 yard
gain moving the ball inside the Miami East 20 yard line. Wysong found
Canan in the end zone to give Bradford a 14-7 lead.
Miami East returned the kickoff giving them position to kick a field
goal making the score 14-10 at half time.
Bradford received the second half opening kickoff and moved into Viking
territory. On a 4th and 1, Bradford turned the ball over. The next play
from scrimmage the Vikings ran for a 50 yard touchdown putting them
back into the lead. Bradford was unable to put together a drive and was
forced to punt. The Vikings again put together a drive moving to the
Bradford 4 yard line to end the third quarter with the Vikings leading
17-14.
The Vikings opened the fourth quarter by scoring and extending their
lead 24-14. Bradford’s Canan broke free for a 60 yard gain moving the
ball to the Viking 20 yard line. Three plays later Wysong found Sell in
the end zone to bring Bradford within 4 points. The Bradford defense
forced a punt giving their offense the ball. A Bradford fumble gave
Miami East the ball back. They moved the ball inside the 10 yard line
when a series of penalties and good defensive play forced a field goal
making the score 27-20.
With 3:03 left Bradford began on their own 20 yard line. The Railroader
offense moved the ball to the Miami East 45 yard line. Barbee broke
away for a touchdown only to have it called back on a controversial
holding penalty. After the penalty the Railroader offense was unable to
put together a drive and found themselves just short in a heartbreaking
loss.
In other action from around the county, Ansonia and Versailles kept
their post season hopes alive. Versailles, thanks to a missed extra
point, topped Minster 21-20, while Ansonia got by Bethel 24-21.
Greenville fell to 3-5 Friday, falling to the Fairfield Panthers 41-35.
