Arcanum out-duels FM in close match

PITSBURG - When Arcanum and Franklin Monroe hook up in anything, throw the records out the door. Team records don't apply in this rivalry.

Franklin Monroe, having won just one match all season (Bethel) gave Arcanum all it wanted before falling in three games, 26-24, 25-14 and 25-21 Thursday in Cross County Conference action at the Hangar.

Holding a 16-9 lead at one point, the upset minded Jets were in control. Then, almost as if on queue, the light came on for Arcanum and turned off on the Jets.

“FM is very scrappy,” said Trojans coach Terry Day. “They don't have a big hitter that comes at you but the ball doesn't hit the floor much. This is a big rivalry and you never know what's going to happen. I was very surprised that we came out so flat. My girls finally decided that this is our rival and we better get our act together because they are beating us right now.”

It took all the Lady Trojans had to take over the opening game. After six straight points off the serves of junior Katie Harmon, FM was finally able to break serve, to stay up 17-15. And then go up by a 18-15 count.

Arcanum finally gained a 20-20 tie but the Jets would not back down.

With things knotted at 24 points each, the Trojans scored the victory gaining the lead by breaking serve and getting a point from junior Brook Allen.

After cruising in the second game, the Trojans faced the same type of play from the Jets in the finale as the score bounced back and fourth between the two foes.

Holding a slim 19-16 advantage, Arcanum went up by eight on five points from Jenna Hangan, including four aces. Despite trailing 24-18, the Jets made one final push, only to fall short.

“Jenna had some really nice serves and they (FM) struggled on her serves,” Day pointed out. “They came back on us though. When you're sitting on 24 and you're needing just one point and they're adding theirs up, you have to say, 'wait a minute' and take care of business.”

“I was very pleased with the way we played tonight,” said Jets coach Jody Bauman. “We don't have a lot of height so we have to rely on our defense. We are not strong at the net and Arcanum started tipping the ball. My girls were determined and it showed. The games were back and forth the whole match. We made our mistakes but we rebounded well. We have won just one match this year but don't judge us by our record. I would say 80 percent of our matched have been like this all year.”

Not being strong at the net, it was the play of senior Brittany Glover the kept the Jets in it.

“I think she played extremely well,” said Bauman. “This is only her second year of playing and she has really stepped up for us. She has a good vertical and when she gets her timing down, she can bring it.”

Arcanum, 10-9 overall, will travel to Stivers today while the 1-18 Jets will be idle until October 11 at Twin Valley South.

The Arcanum junior varsity split the first two with Franklin Monroe before taking the third game 25-20.
