Myers shines in Jet tie

Jet goalie records 16 saves

PITSBURG - When it comes to sports, Sidney Lehman has had one of the best in the area. For many years, girls and boys soccer has been strong.

Tuesday, the Cavalliers rolled into Franklin Monroe with a shot to upend the Lady Jets. It didn’t happen.

The first goal of the game was a shot off the foot of Katrina Brown with the assist from Allison Manning at 16:07 of the second half. After that it was a night for the Jets when defense was the key and that key comes in the form of goal keeper Aubree Myers.

Myers had 16 saves for the Jets, stopping many attempts that looked to be easy scores for the Cavs.

“She was outstanding tonight,” said Jets coach Scott Howell. “We got the goal and I got a little excited. Lehman is a quality team.”

Lehman countered at the 12:38 mark when Laura Wayman scored. That would be all the scoring with the game ending in a 1-1 tie. It was a goal that Howell blames on himself..

“It was a young coaching mistake,” said Howell. “I brought my players back to protect my goalie and she didn’t need it and we gave up one.

“That is a great team over there,” Howell continued (speaking of Lehman). “We are young but we are coming together. We played four games in five days and we are playing well right now.”

In one sequence, Myers made two outstanding saves in just a matter of seconds. Saves that kept a loss from being tacked onto Franklin Monroe’s record.

“The ball bounced off her hard, bounced behind her and she still found a way to keep the ball from crossing the line. Not too many goalies in the area that can do that, if any,” Howell said. “I think she is the best or one of the best goalies in the area.”

With the tournament draw coming soon, Lehman wanted this game in the worst way, only to be disappointed.

“They wanted this win,” admitted Howell. “I said to the girls before the start of the game that it’s time to pick up the pace and they did exactly that. This was a moral victory for us and a letdown for them.”

It was the equivalent of two heavy boxers going toe to toe.

“Amen… amen,” said Howell. “Wow!”

The tie puts the Jets record at 6-3-3 on the season. The Jets will play at National Trail tonight.
