VERSAILLES - State ranked, Marion Local cruised to a 3-0 victory over
Versailles Tuesday in the Mid-West Athletic Conference, as the Lady
Flyers posted straight set, 25-17, 25-16, 25-23 victories.
The loss closed out the regular season for Versailles with an 11-10
mark, on a night where the Tigers would honor its lone senior, Danielle
Langston.
Local flexed its muscles right from the opening serve and never let up,
attacking the net relentlessly, never letting up.
Versailles had its moments but it wasn’t enough to overpower the Flyers.
“We had moments when we played them hard and there were times when we
definitely beat ourselves up,” said Versailles coach Carla Otte. “You
know Marion Local. They are deep and hard to break down. If one girl
has a bad game, they can just go to the next girl and she can pick it
up in her spot.”
“In all three sets, the Tigers were able to stay close early but
mistakes proved to be costly.
“We gave them some easy balls where they could attack us at the net and
we didn‘t respond to that very well,” Otte said “We had moments where
we played well and we gave them too many opportunities where we set
them up for more success than we gave ourselves.”
Down 13-4 in the final set, Versailles fought back, going on an 18-8
run to gain a 22-22 tie, looking to force a fourth set.
“That was a heck of a comeback,” Otte said. “We fought hard, they
didn’t want to end it in three. Unfortunately, it came down to a couple
of points at the end and it’s too bad we didn’t have those points in
the beginning. We dug a big hole and it’s hard to climb out of those
holes. Marion is too good of a team and we knew they were going to make
us earn every single point we got. It was a valiant effort on our part.”
The Versailles junior varsity fell in two sets, 25-15, 25-17.
Versailles will now get ready for Dunbar on Saturday in sectional
action.
