MV closes out season
with big win
By George Starks
UNION CITY- After falling to Twin Valley South Monday, the Mississinawa
Valley Lady Blackhawks rebounded by closing out the 2011 volleyball
season with two straight victories.
Tuesday, the Hawks clubbed the 19-1 Tri-County North Panthers in three
sets and Thursday handed National Trail a loss in three sets, 25-15,
25-8, 25-20, to end the season at 16-5.
In addition, Victoria Humphries had 19 points while Hope Neargarder had
22 assists and 11 digs with Shelby Rehmert getting 22 digs. Rehmert set
the digs record at MV after the loss to South.
Senior Mallory Livingston added another 24 kills, padding her season
high school record as well as being the kills leader in the whole Miami
Valley.
“We’ve done a complete 180 since Monday,” said MV coach Scott Brewer.
“Mallory is one of a kind. She got up so far off the floor on one kill,
I swear after watching the tape, her armpit was above the net. Right
now, Mallory has 342 kills to date and Shelby has 336 digs.”
Now that the season is over, Brewer’s bunch will get the winner of
Covington-South on Tuesday, teams the Hawks lost to this season.
“I would like to play both of these teams again because I think we can
beat them,” Brewer said with confidence. “It really doesn’t matter who
we play, we will get one of them.”
With five seniors making their final appearance Thursday, it will be
hard for Brewer to say goodbye to them.
“We let the five seniors play the first two games and they did a fine
job. We let Shelby serve and she rarely gets to do that. She scored 11
points,” Brewer said. “It was a big night for the seniors. The first
group of freshman were my babies but it’s going to be tough to see this
bunch go.”
