Wave looking for third win in a row

GREENVILLE - It was just a week ago that Greenville pulled off the biggest upset in the state of Ohio.

After barely getting by Paulding two weeks ago, the Wave rolled into Columbus Waterson and rolled out with a 14-7 victory over the defending state champions.

An upset of epic proportion.

All week, head coach TJ Powers had talked to his team about believing in themselves.

“We lost our first four games and now we are 2-4,” said Powers in a phone interview Thursday. “Last week our motto for the week was we were going to go out and shock the world and I think we did that. I got a lot of e-mails, texts and phone calls from other coaches in the state after that win last week. We knew if we played the way we could play, that we could defeat Waterson.”

It all started with the 27-20 victory over Paulding.

“I think that first victory of the season put a spark in our kids,” Powers said. “I think anytime you are winless and you get that first win under your belt, it gives you some confidence and it doesn’t matter who you’re playing, you know you can go out there and get the job done. We didn’t play a great game against Paulding but we won. On that Monday, we started talking about shocking the world and the kids really embraced that. They went out Friday and they believed in each other. They were relaxed and I think we found the recipe for what makes us play well.”

Tonight, the Wave will host Muncie South out of Indiana and a possible three game winning streak.

“It would be huge to get another win right now,” said Powers. “We have Fairbanks (Milford) next week on the road and if we can pull one off there that would give us four in a row going into homecoming with McCain. We want to take it one game at a time and as a coach, you try not to look at the whole picture but if we can win out, we’re looking at the play-offs. It would be a long shot, but there’s a chance. Right now, we have to focus on Muncie Southside.”

Powers knows what the Rebels bring to the table and what the Wave has to do to win tonight.

“We have to tackle in space because they (Muncie) will spread us,” Powers said. “They are more run than pass but they will throw the ball. They like to run their quarterback a lot. We have to contain their speed and on offense, we have to execute. They blitz a lot and we have to be ready for that. They put 11 guys in the box and we have to get them out of the box. We have to spread them out and keep their defense honest.”
