It was the typical ground attack that proved to be the difference.
Having run 34 plays in the first half compared to just 15 for Bradford,
the Ansonia Tigers rolled to a 30-16 Cross County Conference victory
Friday.
“This is typical Eugene Hoening football,” said Bradford coach Curtis
Enis. “Nothing has changed. Eugene has been doing this for over 30
years and in my opinion, he’s the Joe Paterno (Penn State coach) of the
Cross County Conference. Ansonia came out and executed and we couldn’t
stop them.”
With no one putting points on the board in the first quarter, it all
got started in the second when the Tigers went up 8-0 on a Seth Keller
two yard run with 11:48 remaining in the half.
Ansonia went up 16-0 at the :38 mark of the half when Dusty Holcomb
went in from six yards out.
On its next possession, it took Bradford 26 seconds to get on the board
when Brandon Wysong hit James Canan on a 28 yard strike and a 16-8
score at the break in favor of the Tigers.
In the overall scheme of things, it was the Tigers defense that
constantly stopped the Bradford offense.
“We were very nervous about this game,” said Nick Eifert, defensive
coach for Ansonia. “Bradford has some great backs with good speed. Our
coaches had the kids ready. Our defense played well.”
Bradford took the second half kick with good field position (Ansonia
44) after recovering an onsides kick by the Tigers. It was all for
nothing as Wysong’s first play was a pass that Ansonia’s Colon Stumped
intercepted.
“You can’t win football games when you turn the ball over to the
opposition,” said Enis. “Overall, our kids came out and played hard,
giving all they had, but we just didn’t get the stops when we needed
to. We had opportunities, we just didn’t capitalize.”
Bradford, 2-3, will visit Tri-County North next Friday. Ansonia, 4-1,
will host Arcanum for its homecoming next week.
In other games, Arcanum won its second straight game Friday night
against the visiting National Trail Blazers, 54-20, putting the Trojans
at 3-2 on the season on homecoming night
Greenville got its first victory of the year, topping Paulding 27-20,
while Mississinawa Valley remains winless, falling to Twin Valley South
35-6.
Greenville, 1-4, will visit Columbus Waterson next week and Muncie
South in two weeks. Mississinawa Valley, 0-5, will travel to National
Trail next week.
Versailles fell from the ranks of the unbeaten, as Coldwater dropped a
36-19 loss on the Tigers.
Versailles will entertain Delphos St. Jon next week.
