Hawks top Tigers in
three
By George Starks
ANSONIA- Coming in riding a modest winning streak of two straight
matches, the Mississinawa Valley Lady Blackhawks made it three in a row
Tuesday, knocking off Ansonia in three straight games, 25-11, 25-16 and
25-10, in Cross County Conference play.
It all boiled down to three words for the Hawks. Pass, set, kill.
“We’ve been working a lot on our passing and it was great tonight,”
said Hawks coach Scott Brewer. “With Mallory (Livingston) outside and a
nice set to her, and she put the ball away. That happened several times
tonight.”
On offense and defense, it was a matter of keeping Tiger Sarah Berger
under control. Haley Cox did exactly that for Mississinawa Valley.
“Haley did a real nice job even though she missed a couple of blocks,
she did a nice job in the middle,” Brewer said of his middle hitter.
“Hope Neargarder had a couple of real nice blocks in the third game and
overall, they did a nice job on Berger.”
The second game saw the Tigers stealing the momentum from Mississinawa
Valley. With the score in favor of the Hawks, 14-13, MV reeled off four
points off serves by Shelby Rehmert, opening up a small lead that the
Hawks would never lose.
“Ansonia did a good job attacking the ball in the second game,” Brewer
state. “I’m very pleased with the way we played last night (Monday at
Union City) and with the way we played tonight.”
In the deciding game of the match, the Hawks defense stifled the Tigers
offense. Of the 10 points Ansonia scored, only two were scored by the
offense. The rest were on broken serves or net serves by the Hawks.
“Our defense in the third game was good,” Brewer said. “The girls
played well tonight. It was a big win for us.”
On the other end of the ledger, Tigers coach Jason Hemmelgarn saw the
positives about his team.
“We want the opponents to earn the points,” Hemmelgarn said. “We had
better communication and a consistent effort in the second game. When
the Livingston girl is on, she can hit around any kind of block. She is
the best girl we’ve seen play by far. I think you are looking at the
player of the year in her. We‘ve not seen anyone that can hit it that
hard.”
Both teams will be back in action Thursday as the Tigers travel to
Franklin Monroe while the Hawks tangle with Tri-Village.
