Michigan and No. 18
OSU win their openers at home
From George Starks
Akron-Ohio State
Starting his first game in eight years, quarterback Joe Bauserman ran
for a touchdown and threw for three to tight end Jake Stoneburner to
lead the No. 18 Buckeyes of Ohio State to a 42-0 win over the Akron
Zips Saturday in a sweltering season opener.
Luke Fickell made his head-coaching debut for the Buckeyes after being
elevated from defensive assistant to take the place of Jim Tressel, who
resigned in the wake of an ugly NCAA scandal.
Stoneburner became the first Ohio State tight end to catch three TD
passes in a game. Bauserman, who spent the last two years on the
sidelines watching Terrelle Pryor play, completed 12 of 16 passes for
163 yards and the three scores with no interceptions.
Akron’s offense managed just 90 total yards. The Zips, 1-11 a year ago,
came closest to scoring when a 41-yard field goal just before the half
went wide.
The road loss for Akron was its 15th straight.
Western Michigan-Michigan
The Michigan Wolverines beat in-state rivals Western Michigan, 34-10,
in a game stopped late in the third quarter because of lightning.
Both schools agreed to cancel the game with 1:27 left in the third
during a second weather delay.
The Wolverines won Brady Hoke’s debut with linebacker Brandon Herron
returning an interception 94 yards for a touchdown and scoring again on
a fumble return.
Fitzgerald Toussaint had 11 carries for 80 yards and ran for two TDs.
Denard Robinson was 9 of 13 for 98 yards and ran eight times for 46
yards, making him the team’s third-leading rusher in the game.
Alex Carder was 22 of 31 for 183 yards for the Broncos with one
interception and two fumbles. Jordan White had 12 receptions for 119
yards for the Mid-American Conference school.
