PITSBURG - The Stebbins Lady Indians rolled into Franklin Monroe Tuesday night, sporting a mark of 2-6-1 on the season. The Tribe left with a 2-7-1 mark.

Franklin Monroe went to 6-2-1 on the year, posting a 5-2 victory over a tough Stebbins team Tuesday.

Sophomore Allyson Manning led the team with two goals, getting the game winner with 12:08 remaining in the first half, putting the Jets up for good at 2-1.

“Manning usually draws a double team, gets a lot of shirt tugs and she battles through it,” Jets coach Scott Howell said of his sophomore. “She’s a good, hard player. She has a lot of room to improve but I think she is one of the elite in the conference (Cross County Conference).”

Manning would score her second goal with 5:21 remaining but Howell was impressed with the way Stebbins played.

“They (Stebbins) played us really tough,” said Howell. “They play well together and they play a nice style. They never quit, they kept coming at us.”

Franklin Monroe would get on the board first at the 32:44 mark of the opening half off a free kick by Cory Jeffers. Stebbins would gain the tie just over seven minutes later on a penalty kick.

The Jets took the 2-1 lead into the break off the Manning goal, then scored at the 22:05 mark of the second on a penalty kick from Allison Flory. The Jets would go up 4-1 moments later when Aleesia Walker would connect.

Up by three goals at that point, the Jets stayed on the attack, never slowing down.

“We are extremely young and extremely injured right now,” said Howell. ”We never backed off with a three goal lead and I’m happy about that. We are learning on the fly though. We are playing six freshman and six sophomores. We have just two seniors and one healthy junior so we are having to adjust our style of play.”

Franklin Monroe will be idle until next Tuesday when the Jets battle Anna.

“I think Anna is 8-0 and they just beat a good Sidney Lehman team,” Howell acknowledged. “This is going to be a battle. We tied them last year and they were young but we surprised them. Anna will bring it and win or lose, I hope it’s a learning experience for our kids. Stebbins plays a tough D-I schedule and I hope this is a confidence builder for our kids going into the game with the Rockets.

“This is a good win for our kids but we have to be ready for Anna. That’s the bottom line.”

The game with Anna is set for 5 p.m. at Anna.
