UNION CITY- When two teams hook up three times in the same season, it
seldom ever happens that one team will win all three matches.
Mississinawa Valley did what seldom happens.
Senior Mallory Livingston recorded 26 more kills Monday as Mississinawa
Valley rolled to a three game match victory over Ansonia, 25-17, 25-17,
25-11, topping Ansonia for the third time this season.
“We’ve been going to her a lot and she is a good hitter,” Hawks coach
Scott Brewer said. “She is like a good scorer in basketball. When
someone is hot, you go to them. Mallory has been on fire lately.”
It wasn’t about winning or losing.
It was about breast cancer and finding a cure.
“Everybody in this community has been affected by this disease in one
way or another,: said Ansonia coach Jason Hemmelgarn. “It’s unfortunate
that anyone has to go through it but the main thing is you stick
together as a team, stick together as a family.”
Brewer concurred.
“There were two people in my family that experienced breast cancer,”
said Brewer. “we don’t understand how a young person can be attacked by
something like this. It doesn’t make sense and if we can do something
like this to help find a cure, I will jump at it every time. A lot of
these girls may experience it one of these days. I just hope then can
find a cure for it.”
Before the start of the match, Brewer laid it on the line to his kids.
“I warned the girls that when you are playing a team that you have
already beat twice, they will come out ready because they have
something to prove,” said Brewer. “Ansonia came out hot but our girls
had one of their better games tonight.”
It was another night when the Hawks got a slow start out of the gate
against Ansonia.
“I don’t know what it is but we always come out slow against Ansonia,”
Brewer pointed out. “As a coach, you want them to start a little better
but I know they are capable of coming right back so I try not to get to
excited about it.”
While Livingston got the kills, it was Hope Neargarder that set the
table with 23 assists.
“Hope had a real good game tonight,” said Brewer. “Coach Longfellow
(Mindy) and I have been working with her on her hitting as well. Hope
can hit a ball and bring it when she gets up off her feet.”
Despite losing for the third time to the Hawks, Hemmelgarn was pleased
with the way his team played.
“This is the best we have played against them this year,” Hemmelgarn
said. “The girls are learning more and more every time they go up
against Mallory. We were ready for her tonight. The girls came in
motivated and we got some blocks on her.”
