Hawks humble Bees in
three
By George Starks
Mississinawa Valley may have started a little on the sluggish side but
it didn’t take the Hawks long to steal the honey.
The Bees honey that is.
Coming in with a 0-2 Cross County Conference record and 2-4 overall,
the Lady Blackhawk volleyball team was hungry for that first CCC
victory. Thursday, that hunger was satisfied as MV rolled in three
straight games over Bethel 25-14, 25-9 and 25-17.
“We really wanted to get this snide off our backs and get that first
conference win,” said coach Scott Brewer. “We started out with Miami
East and Covington. Two really tough teams that we lost to. We took
Covington to four games Tuesday but we just didn’t have enough to put
them away. It feels good to have this first conference win.”
Coming out of the gate on the slow side (3-3) the Hawks broke it open
quickly, opening up a 10-5 advantage After that, it was all
Mississinawa Valley.
“We had a practice last night and worked on our passing,” Brewer
pointed out. “We wanted to go to certain people in certain
circumstances instead of the same old, same old.. Our passing got off a
little bit at one point to start the match then we started to make some
nice passes and were able to put the ball away.”
Led by Mallory Livingston with 11 kills and 17 assists from Hope
Neargarder, the Hawks had little problem on offense.
“It wasn’t a great amount of kills for Mallory but we got some good
kills from a lot of people in the front row,” Brewer said of his team.
“Hope did a great job passing in the second and third games. So things
really came in nicely for us tonight.”
In the near future, Brewer and the Hawks have a tough road to hold in
upcoming matches.
“I know we have Ft. Recovery and Russia and Russia has a very nice team
so there’s two matches that’s going to be rough.”
The Hawks will battle crosstown rivals Union City on Monday in the
Tee-Pee and will travel to Ansonia on Tuesday for a CCC showdown with
the Tigers.
In addition to Livingston and Neargarder, Chelsie Saintignon recorded
seven digs while Maddie Murphy had five aces in support of the scoring.
