Week one weigh-ins
By George Starks
Okay all you football loving guru’s, it’s that time of year. The NFL
kicked off Thursday night and at the time of this writing, game time
has not come yet as it’s only 12:10 Thursday afternoon.
So here we go with some first week winners.
As a Bengals fan, it’s going to kill me to say this, but look for Colt
McCoy to have a great game Sunday at home against my beloved cats. This
is going to be a year that Bengals fans don’t want to say ‘Who Dey’
because the answer might just be… everyone!
Sad but possibly true. The Bengals won just four games a year ago and
finished in the cellar. To be honest, they may not win a game this year
despite Cedric Benson being back and out of a Texas jail.
Rookie quarterback Andy Dalton isn’t ready for the big time yet. He
needs a year to watch and learn. In my opinion, I let Bruce Gradkowski
take the reigns right now.
With Carson Palmer out, Gradkowski is the only real QB choice Cincy
has. After the first three or four weeks, Dalton may not be able to
walk onto the field unless every play head coach Marvin Lewis calls has
Dalton in the shotgun. In the pre-season, Dalton proved he was no good
under pressure when he set up under center and if he does line up under
center, the ‘Dawgs defense will be licking their chops.
As for the Thursday game, look for the Packers to take it away from the
Saints in Title Town. A year ago, the Packers won the Super Bowl, doing
it on the road. The secret to winning was no secret…DEFENSE! That
defense will prevail in the season opener.
Now, if you think I’m cheating the system, ask Robinson what time this
was sent. Then you will know the game has yet to start.
Other week one locks in my mind: I’ll take the Steelers over Baltimore,
Philly over the Rams, New England over Miami, the Chargers over the
Vikings and the Browns over the Bengals. In other games, the Bears
should handle the Falcons and Tampa Bay over Detroit.
My upset of the week, or at least in my mind it is, Oakland over Denver
on the Monday night late game.
Now for a little NCAA thought. Saturday, the Buckeys will hook up with
the Miami Hurricanes. After posting a 42-0 win over Akron, I thought
the defense played well but the offense stunk. A 42-0 final should have
been the score at the break. Miami is no Akron by any stretch.
Let’s see how well the Buckeyes can handle a stiffer opponent. My pick
to win is Ohio State by 10 at best.
