Wave still seeking
first victory

GREENVILLE- Sometimes, teams start off seasons hot and either fizzle or
stay hot.
On the flip side, some start out cold and get hot or stay cold.
Greenville started out cold and has stayed cold. The Wave fell to 0-3
on the season Tuesday, dropping a 3-0 decision to Wapakaneta.
Once again, it all happened in the first half when the Redskins got on
the board at the 24:20 mark, when Sam Weigardner scored the winning
goal. Just over five minutes later, the second goal of the half would
come, this time off the foot of Colon Mason.
Once again, it was a night of missed opportunities for Greenville.
“We had a little letdown in the first half,” said Wave coach Brent
DeVoss. “We have a tendency to play to the competition. We played a
quality team in Miamisburg (3-0 loss) and then you come out against a
not so quality team like Wapakaneta and we play flat and slow.”
At the start of the season, the goal of the Wave was to get at least 30
shots on goal per match. Greenville never came close to that goal.
“We were out shot 31-7 and we can’t have that,” DeVoss pointed out. “We
have to transition the ball down to the offensive end.”
While the Wave have been shut-out in two straight games, DeVoss did see
a big positive.
“It was a big game for our goalkeeper (Sam Bowers),” DeVoss said. “He
had 17 saves tonight and 16 against Miamisburg. “ He really keeps us in
our games. He has good communication skills and we were still in this
game tonight until the last five minutes. We had opportunities to
score. We just broke down in the final third of the game tonight.”
Out hustled to the ball seems to be a theme DeVoss is becoming all too
familiar with.
“We get to the ball and we give it up in the end because we aren’t
filling space,” DeVoss pointed out. “At that point we become more of a
spectator than a participator. If you make one good pass, it doesn’t
mean you’re done. You have to continue to play the ball. It’s continual
movement. We have to fly to the ball, we didn’t do that but they (Weak)
did. We have to pick it up on the field.”
According to DeVoss, a vital element is missing from his team.
“We need a leader. Someone to step up,” DeVoss pointed out. “We need
someone to lead us on the field and in practice. We are going to push
harder in practice and work on the fundamentals and become more sound
in that area. We need to work on our endurance. We still have not found
the chemistry but we will get that when we find that field general. You
got to have that leader on the field and it doesn’t matter if it’s a
junior or senior but someone has got to step up.”
Greenville will look to get that elusive first win of the season
against Greater Western Ohio Conference foe Troy at Harmon Field.
Junior varsity is slated to begin at 2:30 p.m.
The junior varsity fell to the Redskins, 4-1.
