GREENVILLE - After topping Trotwood Tuesday, 5-0, and getting its first
victory of the season, Greenville took a stinging at the hands of
Sidney Thursday, 5-1, in Greater Western Ohio Conference play.
“We were hoping the momentum we built up from the win over Trotwood
would carry over to tonight, but we were not successful,” said Wave
coach Brent DeVoss. “It was another heartbreak. We gave up some early
goals and that put us behind the eight ball. It’s hard to win at soccer
when you’re behind.”
Sidney scored its first goal of the game at 18:53 on a shot by Preston
Heath.
By the time the first 40 minutes were in the books, Greenville was
staring at a 3-0 deficit.
After the break, Sidney got on the board again when Zack Austin
connected at 34:03.
Greenville finally dented the scoreboard at 27:25 When Hugo van der
Walt scored off an assist by Cedric Corbett.
“Sidney is a quality team,” remarked DeVoss. “We got a nice goal but
when you’re giving up five goals and scoring just one, you’re not going
to win matches. “
A loss is a teal loss according to DeVoss.
“The defense needs to lock it down better and the offense needs to
attack and be more aggressive,” said DeVoss. “I’m seeing improvements
every day and we are moving in the right direction. The ball movement,
the communication and the whole round of the game is getting better. We
are getting good looks at goals and our goals aren’t cheap goals.”
Greenville fell to 1-8 on the season and will travel to Springfield
Saturday for a varsity match only, starting at 3 p.m.
The junior varsity lost to Sidney, 3-0.
