Arcanum wins
slugfest over Tri-Village

NEW MADISON- Every coach wants to see solid offensive output from his
team. No coach wants to see the other team doing the same thing.
Arcanum collected 11 hits and 13 runs against Tri-Village Friday in a
Cross County Conference battle with the Patriots.
On the flip side, the Patriots pounded out nine hits and scored 11
runs. All told, 24 runs were scored and 20 hits recorded in the 13-11
Trojan victory.
With both teams throwing their aces, what was expected was anything
but. Through the first three innings, the Trojans plated all 13 of
their runs while the Patriots dented the plate nine times. After that,
the pitching and defense took over as Arcanum would collect just two
more hits while the Patriots would muster two more runs on just three
hits.
“We expected a close pitching game,” said Arcanum coach Randy Baker.
“We were hitting the ball early then they (T-V) played some great
defense and they are a good defensive team. Their pitcher (Casey
Pearson in relief) was keeping us off balance. He was hitting his spots
and throwing strikes.”
Even though Arcanum never trailed, the Patriots kept the heat on, never
letting up.
After the Trojans plated three in the first off an rbi single from
Dalton Summers and a two run triple by Grady Garno, the Pats came back
with two in the bottom of the frame when Silas Cobb and starting
pitcher Kyle Pipenger scored.
The Trojans would score four more in the second but the Patriots would
counter with two in the bottom of the frame, closing the gap to a 7-4
count.
Arcanum would seemingly blow it open in the third.
The Trojans would send 10 batters to the plate and put six more runs on
the board. Highlighted by a two run double from Mitch Brown and later a
two run single by Garno, Arcanum held a massive 13-4 lead.
Tri-Village would throw a five spot on the board in the bottom of the
inning, sending nine to the dish, with the big blow being a three run
triple off the bat of Pipenger.
After that, both teams settled down, allowing the relief pitchers and
defense to take over.
For the Trojans, Garno came on in relief of starter Isaac Myers in the
third.
“I though Grady did a fine job and we were able to shore up our
defense,” said Baker. “Isaac threw a few more pitches than we would
have liked and got himself in a jam but Tri-Village is a good hitting
team, no doubt. Isaac was hitting his spots and they were just hitting
the ball. It’s a little frustrating when you score six runs and you
think you’ve got them and they come right back on you. Our biggest
problem was we couldn’t get the lead-off batter out. They kept getting
him on base and starting their inning for them and that gave us
trouble.”
The win allowed the Trojans to go to 5-0 in the CCC.
“I told the kids we were going to have games like this,” Baker said.
“Neither one of these teams ever quit. They are a very nice ball club,
no doubt.”
A disappointed Jim Maples had nothing but positive things to say about
his team and the Trojans.
“I thought we showed a lot of character by the way we kept coming back
on them,” said the Patriots coach. “We have a good hitting ball club
and we average about 12 runs a game so I’m confident we can hit the
ball. We dug ourselves a big hole and battled back. If we could have
had a couple of things go better for us, chances are we win this game.
We had opportunities with the bases loaded and left them with runners
at first and third in the fifth. Just one or two little things that
could have been different and the outcome might be different. There is
no better coach in this conference than Randy Baker and we all know it.
He always has his team prepared and their heads are in the game.”
With Pipenger on the mound for T-V and Meyers for the Trojans, it
looked like a classic pitching duel to Maples.
“We both had our number ones out there tonight,” Maples said. “No one
thought we would be here with a 13-11 score. Overall, the kids
responded well. It happens.”
Arcanum will host Ansonia on Tuesday while the Patriots will host
Bradford on the same night. Both will be CCC contests.
