Greenville sweeps twin-bill

GREENVILLE- The crazy train that is Lady Wave softball continued to
roll Saturday as Greenville picked up two more victories on the season.
The opening game with D-IV Triad, one of the best teams in the state,
was no match for Greenville as the Wave clipped the Cardinals wings,
7-2.
In the night-cap, the Wave got the Elks by the horns, dropping an 8-3
loss on Centerville.
Despite two errors in the second game, after playing flawless in the
opener, Wave coach Jerrod Newland was quite pleased with his team’s
effort for the day.
“It was a good day for Lady Wave softball,” said Newland. “We are
getting better each day. Today, we played two pretty good teams. We
played great defense here today, barring a couple of plays, but we are
getting better.”
When senior pitcher Ashley Hanes goes, so goes the Wave and Saturday
was a prime example.
“When Hanes keeps a low pitch count and keeps the ball down and Kayla
(Harshbarger), Kelly (Martin) and Greer (Brianna) field a lot of ground
balls, we are going to get nine out of ten and we are going to be
pretty tough and that was the case here today,” said Newland of his
pitcher and infielders.
On offense, the Wave had help from nearly everyone in critical moments.
In the win over Triad, senior catcher Paige Wolter had three hits in
four trips, falling one hit short of hitting for the cycle with a
single, double and triple to her credit.
In the second game, Greenville headed into the home half of the fifth,
trailing 3-1.
In the home half of the frame, the Wave sent 10 hitters to the plate,
scoring six times with the highlight being a bases clearing double off
the bat of the seventh hitter, Erin Albright.
“Paige has been seeing the ball really well,” Newland pointed out. “In
the second game, it was the third time through and we adjusted a little
bit. Paige got on, Kelly followed her and great things started
happening. Albright got the big hit, the three run double. That cleared
the bases and gave us momentum. That’s why you get 21 outs and we use
them all.”
Coming in to Saturday’s action, Greenville was 7-4, 1-1 in the GWOC
North.
Now, 9-4 overall, Greenville will get geared back up for the North on
Monday, heading to Troy on Monday and then the Wave will host the
Trojans on Tuesday.
“We control our own destiny,” said Newland. “We are getting better and
hopefully I’ll be bugging you guys in June.
