Peters Wins
2012 Midwest Ohio Youth Open
Versailles HS Bowlers...
Nathan Peters won the 2012 Midwest Ohio Youth Bowling Tournament in
Coldwater, Ohio on Sunday, April 15th. This tournament was split into
two divisions. Boys Scratch and Girls Scratch. The format was a 6 game
qualifying block bowling across 6 pair of lanes. After the 6 Qualifying
Games, the field of 24 was then cut to the top 8 bowlers for best 2 out
of 3 Match Play competition.
The Versailles High School Bowlers had a great showing for the finals.
3 out of the 8 finalists were from Versailles. Benjamin Didier
qualified 4th with a 1,139, Michael Davidson qualified 6th with a 1,110
and Nathan Peters qualified 8th with a 1,077. The lane pattern was a
very demanding condition where keeping the ball in play and covering
spares was extremely important.
The 1st round of match play was a best 2 out of 3 format. Ben bowled
Blake Spangler from Coldwater, which went 3 games: 195-191, 173-196 and
175-201 with Blake advancing to the top 4. Michael bowled Garrett Stout
from St. Henry which went 3 games: 246-204, 158-196 and 179-178 with
Michael advancing to the top 4. Nathan Peters bowled Drew Gay: 211-182,
235-177 and 192-173 with Nathan advancing to the top 4.
The semi-finals and final match was then a 1 game match. This was
starting to get interesting as this could potentially be an all
Versailles finals. Nathan and Michael both won their matches 200-179
and 193-181 to make for an exciting all Tiger finish. “To see both kids
in the finals was extremely satisfying as a coach, the bad thing about
it was one of them was going to lose.” The match started out back and
forth, but Nate got lined up and put together a nice string of strikes
late in the game to finish with a strong 217 to Michael’s 181.
Nathan won a nice 1st place Scholarship of $400 and Michael’s 2nd place
finish earned him $200 in Scholarship money. The USBC (United States
Bowling Congress) SMART Program (Scholarship Management and Accounting
Reports for Tenpins) offers millions of dollars in scholarship money to
help young bowlers get a jump start on their dreams. More than $6
million in scholarship money is offered each season by bowling
associations and certified tournaments and proprietors throughout the
United States.
In the girls division, 3 Versailles bowlers competed in the event.
Paige Holsapple, Megan Monnin and Tori Minnich. Paige made the cut to
the top 8 qualifying 7th with a score of 974. Megan just missed the cut
by 9 pins rolling a 945 and Tori finished 16th with a score of 828.
Paige bowled Haley Moeder from Coldwater in the best 2 out of 3 and was
defeated 236-141 and 152-134. Erika Hartings defeated Jenna Wenning
(both from Coldwater) 194-178 to win the girls division.
