Wave tennis getting better
By George Starks
GREENVILLE- Coming in with a 3-5 record overall, the Greenville boys
tennis team has been showing improvement as time goes along, according
to Coach Dennis Kiser.
Milton-Union came into Greenville and rolled out with a 5-0 victory
over the Wave netters Thursday.
“They (MU) are that good,” said Kiser. “I thought overall, playing
against good competition, we have improved a lot and I’m proud of them.
We are so much better and are more consistent. We have improved on our
skills a lot.”
The best shot of the night for the Wave to avoid the shutout came in
the first doubles as Greenville’s Landon Kiser and Sam Bowers went
three sets, losing 7-5, 4-6 and 6-1.
In the number one singles match, Derek Lockhart fell to Matt Brumbaugh
6-0, 6-0 with the second singles player, Yanich Koelling dropped a 6-2,
6-1 decision to Beau Smedley
Chase Strawser took the court in the third singles and eventually lost
to Marshall Winterbotham, 6-3, 6-0.
In the second doubles, Evan Kiser and Alex Wolter dropped a 6-4, 6-4.
“Both my doubles teams are playing extremely well,” Kiser pointed out.
“I’ve been experimenting to figure out the best combinations and I have
a couple of different combinations I can go to.”
Even though Lockhart was shut-out, Kiser was pleased with his
performance.
“The kid Derek played is probably the best he’s played all season and
the kid from Milton-Union (Matt Brumbaugh) is just a freshman,” Kiser
said.
Now 3-6, no one should base the Wave team solely on their record.
“I think we are better than what our record shows,” Kiser said of his
team “We play some good team and the only way we are going to get
better is if we are playing good, solid teams. We are competing the
best we can and that’s about all you can ask for. With the GWOC
tournament coming up and then the state tournament, we can do some
damage.”
Greenville, 3-6, played at Northmont Friday and will see action again
Tuesday at home with Trotwood.
Greenville will host a junior-varsity tournament.
