Burk throws two-hitter

GREENVILLE- Greenville senior Jacob Burk may have had one of his best
outings of the 2012 season. Getting the nod to start against the 13-3
Versailles Tigers, Burk was masterful.
Through five innings on the hill, Burk allowed one hit, fanned five and
walked one in the Wave 8-0 victory over the Tigers.
It was a night when everything clicked for the Wave.
“I told the kids that in the four years I’ve been here that this is the
best game I’ve seen this group play,” said Wave coach Eric Blumenstock.
“It was about as close to flawless as you can get in a baseball game.
Jacob was on it tonight and he’s the best we got. I thought he was the
best we had at times last year. He threw the ball well tonight, had
good control and was hitting his spots. He was keeping the Versailles
hitters off balance. He is a game pitcher and he wanted to stay out
there for the entire game but he is pitching Monday against Piqua and
that’s for the GWOC North title. So we have to have him Monday for
that.”
While Burk could not have been much better on the mound, the Wave
offense was right in line with Burke. Greenville pounded out 12 hits on
the night but the one that really counted came in the first inning.
Senior Jon Edwards deposited a 1-1 hanging curve ball over the
left-centerfield fence, giving Greenville the only run it would need to
get the win.
“That was only his second home run of the year,” Blumenstock said. “The
thing about him is that he wrestles right up until the baseball season
starts. He’s just naturally quick with the hands and he’s a baller. As
a team, we can hit with anybody. Compared to last year, it’s like night
and day. “
With wins over Troy and two straight over Trotwood-Madison, Blumenstock
couldn’t be happier.
“Things are really starting to come together,” Blumenstock admitted.
“We had three big wins and I thought we might let our guard down but
tonight, we came out, ready to take care of business.”
With just one error in he game, the Wave defense was as good as the
rest of the team overall.
“We’ve had some issues with the fielding this season,” said the Wave
coach. “Tonight, we were much better. Half the runs we’ve given up this
year are unearned so our focus in the field was there. Overall, not
perfect but close to it. We shut down a very good Versailles team
tonight.”
With the loss, the Tigers go to 13-4 on the year while the Wave
improved to 8-5 overall.

homerun in the bottom of the
first against Versailles. It would prove to be the only run the Wave
needed to win the game.
