Bradford
pops Ansonia in week one upset
By Don Selanders
BRADFORD- It’s been awhile since the Bradford Railroaders have put a
notch in the win column against the Ansonia Tigers, but as they, every
dog has its day or in this case every Railroader will have their day.
Bradford kicked off the season in winning fashion by posting a 48-12
score over the visiting Tigers.
The Railroaders went on defense first holding the Tigers to four plays
and out. The offense took the field and James Canan, Luke Hafer, and
Jake Cline moved the ball 30 plus yards on the first three plays of the
game. Canan broke loose for his first TD, Wysong’s PAT was good making
the score 7-0. The next series saw Ansonia turning the ball over to the
Railroaders after a Wirrig fumble recovery.
From there the offense didn’t take long for Canan to get his second TD
and again the PAT by Wysong was good, to make the score 14-0.
On the next series the Tigers were moving the ball when the Railroaders
caused another fumble recovered by Josh Hoelscher. Bradford was on the
move again only to have penalties take away some good offensive plays
for positive yardage. Once again the offensive line made a nice hole
for Canan and 63 yds later he was back in the end zone for TD #3. The
PAT was good, making it a lopsided, 21-0 score.
The next score came from a nice run by Luke Hafer for 35 yds and the
TD, PAT good. 28-0 and the rout was on.
The Railroaders defense had some missed tackles a few penalties and the
Tigers were in the end zone after a nice drive by their offense making
the score 28-6.
The Tigers came back with an onside kick that they recovered.
The Tigers were moving the ball again only to have the Railroaders
defense stiffen and give the ball back to the Railroader Offense. The
Ansonia defense shut down the Railroaders only to have Luke Hafer pin
them deep in their own territory with a 65 yd punt. The Railroaders
went in at the half with a 28 to 6 lead.
Bradford took the ball for the beginning of the third quarter again it
was the offensive line making the way for the backs to put together
another drive which brought the score to 35-6.
Bradford defense again gave the ball back to the Railroader O and again
with carries from Hafer, Rench, and Canan the score was 41-6.
Ansonia put together one last drive to make the Score 41-12 only to
have Bradford move the ball back down the field to finish it up with
Corey Rench scoring the Railroaders last TD, making the score 48 to 12.
Next Friday the Railroaders will play the Bethel Bees at Warner field
at 7:30.
