Attendance down
from opening night
By George Starks
GREENVILLE- A year ago, the idea was being thrown around to have two
nights of tractor pulls at the Darke County Fair.
With sellout crowds attending the one-day affair, a second day sounded
like a great idea for the largest county fair in the nation.
With the majority of the tickets sold for the Tuesday night show, the
Wednesday attendance may have been somewhat disappointing.
According to Duane 'Lum' Edwards, the voice of the Darke County Tractor
Pullers Association, it's something that needs to be addressed.
"Tuesday night, we were at about 90-95 percent capacity," Edwards said.
"Tonight, we are at 75 percent or so."
Edwards said the lower numbers weren't because of a lack of advertising.
"We had the word out through radio locally WTGR, this website, the
newspapers and 5,000 flyers that went out on Marco's pizza boxes. When
I go out of town, I talk to people. There are more people outside of
the county that knew about two days of pulling than what's here."
So now the question is, what can be done to make things better?
"I really don't know at this time," admitted Edwards. "Last night was a
great night but it's been well publicized. We have semi-trailers
sitting around the county that advertise the two days of pulling. We
are going to have to sit down and brainstorm this thing."
Even though the dates for 2013 have been set (Aug. 20-21) for the two
night of pulling, Edwards knows the future is in the hands of the board.
"We know there are some problems that need to be resolved and that fair
board will address those problems," Edwards pointed out.
Although Edwards would not say what those problems were but with two
days of pulls in the books, Edwards was able to admit to the obvious.
"Two days of pulling and it's run smoothly," Edwards said. "Everyone
has jumped in to help promote this thing so we can't complain about
that. Marco's, The Tiger, County News Online and others, promoted this
and we appreciate that. We just need to figure out what we need to do
to boost the attendance."
Although the final numbers have yet to be made public, Edwards said he
was very appreciative of everyone that jumped onboard to help promote
the Darke County pulls not only with the DCTPA but the NTPA.

With
90 percent of the tickets sold for Tuesday night's pull, that number
decreased by nearly a quarter for Wednesday's show.
