Wave energy zapped early

GREENVILLE - When Greenville took the early 1-0 lead on Stebbins
Tuesday, scoring on a goal off the foot of Jessica Kerg, it looked as
if the Lady Wave had the momentum to fuel a much needed victory.
Kerg scored the Wave goal with 29:13 remaining in the opening half.
Forty-eight seconds later, Stebbins’ Nicole Brandt unloaded a kick from
nearly 30 yards. The kick bounced off the crossbar and went straight
down, barely breaking the plane of the goal line for the score,
knotting things up at one goal each.
Brandt would score two more goals, including the game winner, to give
Stebbins a 5-1 soccer victory.
With injuries building up against the Wave and their coach Justin
Gonzalez, things are tough for Lade Wave soccer right now.
“We have a lot of battered kids out there right now,” said Gonzalez.
“We had to cancel the last two junior varsity games because of our
injured players. We have kids playing positions they’ve never played
before. It’s going to take some time for them to get into the groove
again and move the ball well.”
When the Indians scored their first goal, the momentum shifted and the
Wave never recovered.
“We have to be able to turn that into a positive,” Gonzalez said. “We
have to be able to turn around and go right back at them and we can’t
seem to do that. I really need to get some healthy players back so we
can turn things around. Mikayla Byers is the center of our defense and
she’s a senior and is hurt right now.”
Despite the loss, Gonzalez was pleased with one aspect of his girls’
game.
“We never quit,” Gonzalez said. “That’s the good thing about these
girls, they never give up. I see the looks on their faces and it’s hard
for me because I know the will is there. We just have to get some kids
healthy and get them working together.”
Now 0-3 on the season, Greenville will play at Fairmont Saturday at 11
a.m. and then will travel to Franklin Monroe on Tuesday for a battle
with the Jets.
