Lady
Wave Stadium getting closer to becoming a reality
By George Starks
GREENVILLE — The Lady Wave softball team is taking huge new steps to
improve its program.
As reported by CNO after the spring awards for the Lady Wave Softball
team at the Elks in Greenville, coach Jerrod Newland said funds were
being raised for the project that was originally set to begin in
September on Diamond three.
“This is an exciting time for Lady Wave softball,” said Newland. “Ten
years ago, I couldn’t have seen this coming but then again, Lady Wave
softball over the past 10 years has been amazing.
Stebbins Field is only 10 years old, but has become a centerpiece in
the Greenville community. Two years ago it added full concessions and
upgraded restrooms. Now the future of Stebbins Field and Lady Wave
softball is about to take the next turn.
The upgrade will happen in three parts at at total cost of 100,000
dollars
“Not too many teams try to raise $100,000 for their stadium,” Newland
said. “But that’s what the Lady Wave softball team is gonna do.”
Newland is currently working to raise $30,000 for the first phase of
development, and he’s aiming to start work as soon as October.
“The goal is to break ground on Halloween, Oct. 31,” Newland said.
“$30,000 raised or pledged will turn the dirt.”
The first phase of the project will include a varsity dugout and
equipment storage area. The second step would see the visitors dugout
built and the final step would see the press box, video tower and
grandstands.
Newland has no doubt the goals willl be reached.
“I’m very confident that we’ll have $30,000 pledged for the project,”
he said.“The response is amazing.”
When its all said and done, Newland would like to see professional
tournaments held in the Treaty City with teams and fans from across the
state coming into Greenville.
“When this is finished, it will be a championship field,” said Newland.
All funds are being raised through local businesses instead of
fundraisers, keeping the personal touch in effect.
All supporters will have the option to be one, two or three year donors
but the Lady Wave will be out earning money to help support the project.
The team will be parking cars during the fair at Baumgardner’s car wash
with all proceeds being directed for the project.
Since Newland came onboard 10 years ago, Lady Wave softball has one
state title (2007), one state runner-up (2012) and state final four,
three regional titles and a host of district and sectional
championships.
When asked if the next 10 years will be as good as the first, Newland
simply said, “I hope it’s better.”
