Tough season ahead...
Brewer set to engage the 2012 season
By George Starks

UNION CITY- Coming off a stellar 16-7 season a year ago, the Mississinawa Valley Lady Blackhawks will have virtually a whole new look on the floor.

Losing six excellent players from a year ago, including Mallory Livingston, Shelby Rehmert, Haley Cox, Chelsie Saintignon and a host of others, Hawks coach Scott Brewer is getting his team ready for what will be a tough year.

“We lost a lot off that team from a year ago, five to graduation and those girls played a lot of ball,” Brewer said. “We do have a couple of good players coming back, starting with Hope Neargarder. She was first team all-conference and was a nominee for all-district. She is recovering from a broken collarbone and the doctor hasn’t fully released her yet. Maddie Murphy will be in there for us and she’s solid. We also have the last of the Livingston girls, Madison, who is a solid as they come. So we are going to be competitive on the floor and hopefully, every game. We may have lost Mallory but we still have the family.”

With Miami East being the class of the Cross County Conference and losing literally no one from a year ago, Brewer knows it won’t be easy.

“Everyone knows they are playing for second place in the conference,” Brewer admitted. “Miami East won state last year and lost no one.”

“We will compete but we won’t dominate the way we did a year ago,” Brewer pointed out. “We are going to win games but I will have to do some coaching. Arcanum and Tri-County North had very nice, solid teams last year. Franklin Monroe has built its team up under Amy Booher from a year ago.”

Heading into the post season with a solid 16-7 mark in 22 games played, the Hawks took an early exit in the sectional round in a one and done situation.

A very disappointing end to a successful season.

“We have to look past that night and get this seas started out right,” said Brewer. “We have to put that behind us and I think the girls have done that. We are doing well in practice and the kids are working hard and getting ready. “

Mississinawa Valley will open at Bradford in the county tournament on August 25 at Bradford.

The Hawks will get their first tune-up Tuesday in a four way scrimmage as they will host Franklin Monroe, Arcanum and Botkins from 6-8 p.m.

The annual alumni game will be next Thursday from 6-8. Brewer encourages all alumni to come out for the event.
