Reds can’t
solve Burnett, snap win streak at five
CINCINNATI -- They can’t win ‘em all.
It hasn’t seemed that way recently in Cincinnati, as the Reds had won
22 of their past 25 entering Sunday, but a lights-out performance down
the stretch from Pirates starter A.J. Burnett snapped the Reds’
five-game win streak in a 6-2 defeat at Great American Ball Park.
Like they did in the first two games of the series, the Reds got on the
board first, chalking up a run in the opening frame on an RBI double
from Jay Bruce. Two first-inning hits and one run already matched the
club’s total from the last time they faced Burnett back on May 30 in
Pittsburgh, when Burnett allowed two total hits and no earned runs in
seven innings.
The Pirates returned the favor in the second, when Neil Walker blasted
a two-run home run off Reds starter Homer Bailey, who continued his
recent struggles.
Drew Stubbs knocked a solo home run for the Reds in the third, but it
would be the last hit they would scrounge off Burnett, who retired 24
of 25, including 18 in a row before walking two in the ninth inning and
exiting after 8 2/3. Joel Hanrahan got the last out for his 32nd save.
Bailey didn’t have the same fortune, and a two-run fourth by Pittsburgh
marked the end of his outing.
Two singles followed by a two-run standup triple from Pirates rookie
left fielder Starling Marte -- the first three-bagger of his career --
made the score 4-2. Bailey would get stuck in a two-out, bases-loaded
jam in the fifth inning before Reds manager Dusty Baker brought on
reliever Jose Arredondo, who struck out Clint Barmes to get out of the
mess.
