Class of 98
wins softball tournament

VERSAILLES – For the second year in a row the weather had organizers
scrambling to get games in at the Versailles alumni softball tournament.
Last year the winner had to be declared off the field because of rain
on the final day of the tournament. While Friday night’s contests went
as scheduled, storms wreaked havoc on Saturday’s games.
Rains Saturday morning pushed games back two hours. With the delays,
games were scheduled to start on Sunday morning. A late afternoon storm
pushed back games even further.
The plan was to play throughout the night to get all the games in. With
another big storm coming in at around 9 p.m., the decision was made to
suspend all loser bracket games and continue the winner’s bracket on
Sunday.
Sunday saw volunteers working on the diamonds in an attempt to get them
game ready. With games set to start around noon, they were reduced to
five innings and a one-one pitch count, single elimination games.
There were nine teams still in the winner’s bracket going into Sunday’s
action, with one game incomplete from Saturday. The 1984 team decided
to forfeit their game with 1994 before games started on Sunday, leaving
eight teams.
The 2005 squad came back to knock off the class of 1991 in the first
game. The class of 2002 knocked off the class of 1992 in the second
game. The class of 2009 took down the class of 1988, and 1998 knocked
out the class of 1994.
In the semifinals the 1998 and 2002 teams advanced to the finals. The
1998 team upset the 2009 squad while 2002 took out the 2005 team.
The 1998 team took down the 2002 team to be declared the 2012
tournament champions.
