VERSAILLES- The Versailles Tigers took to the field Tuesday in the
first full scrimmage of the year.
With opening night of the high school football season just 20 days
away, teams across the state are fine tuning the offense and defense in
preparation for opening night, August 24.
Head coach Adam Miller watched his team take on Brookville and overall
was somewhat pleased with what he witnessed.
“If I had to give my team a grade today they would earn a ‘B’” said
Miller after the scrimmage. “On offense, we were moving the ball but we
weren’t gashing them by any means. We saw some things that were good
and some things that needed to be improved on. These kids haven’t had a
whole lot of experience moving ahead in the last four years. We have
been emphasizing to them to fire off the line and push people around. I
will be happy to get four yards a play from the offense so we’re happy
there. We are a ball control team and we may not score on every
possession but we can move the ball well.”
On defense, Miller was optimistic as well.
“We are starting to get the feel for some of the different wrinkles we
have in,” Miller pointed out. “Overall, I think the defense was pretty
solid.”
With the first full team scrimmage in the books, Miller told his team
afterwards about mistakes that needed to be corrected.
“Getting the backs out in the flats is something we really needed to
work on,” Miller pointed out. “We struggled on offense with picking up
on what they were doing on defense when they made a change. I think
mentally, the kids know where they needed to be but we just need to
sharpen things up.”
With 72 kids out for football, Miller is pleased with the turnout.
“I’m very happy with the numbers,” Miller stated. “All the kids are
working hard and I couldn’t be happier with that.”
Coming off a very successful 2011 season that saw the Tigers in the
post-season, the goals for the Tigers are easy to see.
“We want to get back to the playoffs,” said Miller. “Last years senior
class was a very talented senior class but I feel we’ve got some young
kids that are stepping up,” said Miller. “Winning the conference is
always a goal but we want to get back in the playoffs and go deeper
than we did a year ago.”
Versailles will scrimmage at Van Wert on Saturday and will open the
2012 season at home with Celina on the 24th of August.
The Tigers will travel to Graham the following week before going on the
road again in week three to go to war at Coldwater, the team that
eliminated the Tigers from the post season a year ago.
