Wave boys battle tough alumni team

GREENVILLE- With seven college players on the field for the Greenville alumni Saturday, the 2012 Wave soccer team had a very tough test on their hands. The alumni dressed 25 players and scored two big goals putting the varsity team down by a two spot. The varsity would come back to score two of its own and finish with a 2-2 tie. "That was quite a strong alumni team," said Wave coach Brent DeVoss. "I feel we have one of the best alumni teams out there and it only gets us ready to play in the GWOC. I say it time and time again that the GWOC is one of the toughest conferences in the state and this game will get us ready for GWOC play."

After getting things even at two goals each, the Wave defense stiffened, shutting the alumni down.

"I have to give the credit to my assailant coach, Rob Maher, because he was the one that held the conditioning and got these guys in playing shape," DeVoss said.

There were positives and negatives to be looked at by DeVoss.

"We had solid possessions and were able to move the ball well," DeVoss pointed out. "All the players got involved and had a lot of touches. We were weak on the scoring side. We want to get at least 20 shots on goal and today we had only a dozen. That's not enough. We had the opportunities but passed them up. We have to work harder in the shot department. Defensively, we were short two players tonight so we played a hybrid defense and it worked out really well for us.”

Greenville will host Bethel on August 16 starting at 5 p.m.
