A-Tigers no match for mighty Lady Patriots
TV remains undefeated
By George Starks
ANSONIA- After falling to Tri-Village, 85-19, in the opening round of
the Bill Burkett, the Ansonia Lady Tigers looked better against the
Patriots Thursday in Ansonia but still presented little problems for
the girls from Tri-Village.
The Patriots put five in double figures, led by senior Teha Richards
with 22 as Tri-Village dropped a 97-23 loss on Ansonia in conference
play Thursday.
In addition, Echo Brown and Shaye Thomas both netted 14 and Krystal
Falknor 12 in support but the tone was set early in the game when Lexi
Bruner scored 17 first half points that included five three point
bombs, leading the Patriots to a commanding 52-15 lead at the half.
While the game was a rout early as T-V went up 31-9 after the opening
eight minutes, Patriots coach Brad Grey admitted something to the press
in attendance.
“It’s fun to win but I really don’t think this kind of a game is really
fun for anyone involved,” said Grey. “Lexi was out there hitting 20
footers and it’s great to know you have that. It’s a good sight to see
because we’re going to need that down the road. We have a tough stretch
of games that’s going to hit us here (starting with Bethel today at
noon).”
No matter what defense the Tigers threw at the Patriots, the visitors
responded to the triangle, the man and the zone.
“There’s no doubt we can score,” Grey said. “We’ve had some struggles
this year but when we’re feeling it, there are a lot of different kids
that can score the basketball and that’s a great feeling. I’ve been
trying to tell a lot of people for the last three years that we can
score the basketball. I don’t think they believed that. I think they
are finding out that we are a pretty good basketball team and not just
a good basketball player.”
Despite the lopsided score, Ansonia coach Amber Short saw the positives
in her team.
“I thought we handled their press well at times,” said Short. “We
worked on ripping through and not dribbling all the time and making
bounce passes. We broke through it a lot easier than we did the first
time. We did little things better tonight and I’m happy about that. We
showed a lot of character and I think my girls played really well.”
Ansonia was led by Brooke Neal with eight and two other players with
seven.
The Tigers will play at Covington today.
