Lady Trojans get three in a row
By George Starks
ARCANUM - The Arcanum Lady Trojans made it three straight Monday by
holding off Bradford, 40-36, in a close Cross County Conference game.
With junior Abby O'Donnell in foul trouble at the end of the third
quarter, Trojan coach Rachel Fearon was forced to pull her for a few
minutes.
According to Fearon, in a phone interview, that's when the Roaders
started to make hay.
"I never really got nervous until Abby got her fourth foul," Fearon
said. "I had to get her out at the start of the fourth quarter and
Bradford started to make a run on us."
Coupled with the fact the Trojans were unable to connect at the foul
line, it was the defense that took control for Fearon.
"Our defense really made the difference," admitted Fearon. "I think we
might have shot 35 percent from the line. If we could have hit half our
foul shouts, we would have won by fifteen. We couldn't put our free
throws in. Our girls are playing such hard defense, I think it affected
us on the line. Our defense was the difference."
"With the Trojans defense in high gear, the Trojans ball handling
skills stood out in the victory.
"We are being patient on offense," said Fearon. "We are making good
decisions with the ball, and before we would get the ball and go a
hundred miles an hour down the floor and we wouldn't even hold the ball
up if we had nothing. Now, we are making those decisions and it's
making a huge difference in our offense."
O'Donnell led the way for Arcanum with 14 points while Bradford had two
in double figure scoring, led by Brooke Dunlevy with 15 and Makayla
Barga with 10 in support.
Arcanum, now 4-6, will host Yellow Springs on Saturday before the
Christmas break when the Trojans travel to Franklin Monroe to battle
the Jets on January 3, 2013.
That fourth win is one more that Arcanum had a season ago.
"It feels good," said Fearon. "I think the kids are feeling good about
it as well. It's a good feeling to say three in a row."
