Trojans shine in five way meet
Arcanum gets first
win of the season

VERSAILLES- It was a huge day for the Arcanum wrestling program and
first year coach Andy Marker.
After going 0-10 in its first two dual matches, Brookville and
Greenville) the Trojans pulled off a complete 180, going 3-2 at the
Versailles Invitational Saturday.
After losing to Tri-County North and Triad, the Trojans rebounded,
scoring wins over Triad, Lehman Catholic and National Trail.
“We could have won the match with West Liberty Salem as that
match ended in a tie,” said Marker. “We had to go into the criteria of
a tie breaker and it went all the way to near falls and they had one
more near fall than we did and that decided the match.”
Going 3-2 overall on the day, it was a day to be happy for Arcanum
wrestling.
“The kids fought hard all day,” said Marker. “The loss West Liberty was
my fault. I bumped Caleb Sanders up to 113 from 106 so he would have a
match to wrestle. We could have taken the forfeit at 106 but we are
there to wrestle. It’s not about what you do in December but in
February. We don’t want to be a pretender in December but a competitor
in February and that’s what we’re working towards.”
For some teams, three wins out of five doesn’t say much for the program.
For Arcanum, it speaks volumes.
“This was a big day for us,” Marker quipped. “Some of the kids were
disappointed in what they did on the mat today but overall, we were in
a very good mood. A couple of guys lost matches they shouldn’t have
lost and I talked to them when we got home and we know there’s a lot of
things to correct but the attitudes are outstanding.”
With 12 teams on hand, the Trojans were in a different bracket than the
host Versailles.
It was a district atmosphere.
“I told the guys before we went in to the gym that this was going to be
a district atmosphere,” said Marker. “Today, we found out where we
stand and what we need to work on because some of these schools we are
probably going to see again at the end of the year. So this was a good
preview to a sectional tournament.”
Arcanum, 3-12 in duels, will be in action on December 20 in the Tipp
City Duels.
