Jets hold
flight ops in Ansonia

ANSONIA- To say it was Franklin Monroe basketball at its best would be
pushing. But it sure resembled it Friday in Ansonia.
It’s no secret that FM coach Troy Myers wants a team that resembles the
Jets of the past and Friday night that resemblance was there.
A relentless defense, coupled with control of the boards and three
people in double figures in scoring with junior Trey Mong scoring 11
points and grabbing 14 rebounds.
“Trey is an animal. He doesn’t just show up on game night,” Myers said
of his post player. “He works at what he does. When we practice, he
will do there what he did tonight with the same intensity. He works his
tail off every stinking night in practice. I’m more impressed with our
rebounding tonight than anything else.”
All that added up to a 58-39 Cross County Conference victory over
Ansonia.
“This was a good way to start a season,” said Myers. “You never know
what you’re going to get on opening night but if we play all year long
the way we played tonight, we’ll be in good shape.”
Ansonia hit the first shot of the game, taking a 3-0 lead. After that,
it was all Franklin Monroe.
Holding a 20-12 lead after one and a 32-19 advantage at the break, the
Jets broke out the heavy ammunition on defense, holding the Tigers to
just three points in the third quarter.
“Our defense was a sticking point at half-time,” said Myers. “We gave
up a lot of dribble drives in the second quarter and I’m very happy
about the third quarter defense. It wasn’t just me but it was our guys.
They take a lot of pride in what we do on the defensive end. They know
who we are and they just have to have the toughness every possession.”
While Meyers was more than pleased with his team’s play, Ansonia coach
Darrick Barga admitted his team needs work.
“You never want to start with a loss but FM is a good team,” Barga
said. “I’m proud of the fact my kids kept scrapping and never let up.”
Jordon Wright led all scorers for the Tigers with 20 points but had
little support.
“I don’t think we had anyone score more than two points other that the
10 scored by Derek Kiser so we have to get some points there,” Barga
pointed out. “We have to rebound better but my kids aren’t quitters.
They hung in there and scrapped.”
Franklin Monroe, 1-0, will be idle until next Friday when the
Tri-Village Patriots come calling. Ansonia traveled to Ft. Loramie
Saturday and will visit Bradford next Friday.
