Jets win big on
homecoming night
By George Starks
PITSBURG- It’s no secret that when coaches and kids hit the floor,
field or track, the goal is always the same.
Go undefeated.
With that in mind, there are some games during a season that are must
wins for all schools.
One of those is homecoming.
That portion on the Franklin Monroe season happened Friday in The
Hangar as the Jets unloaded a blitz screen on Newton, dropping a 60-43
bomb on the Indians.
While the 17 point effort was big for head coach Troy Myers and his
team, it was the defense that made the difference.
Holding a commanding 18-10 lead after one, the FM defense took control
is the second and even more so in the third.
Franklin Monroe took a 36-19 lead at the break, then held Newton to a
mere five points in the third for a whopping 50-24 advantage.
“Defense is our sticking point,” said Myers after the game. “We talk
every single day about the havoc we can create on the defensive end and
how we get consecutive stops. It’s vital to what we do. We can’t play
our offensive game if we don’t defend and our kids know that. They are
held accountable each and every day. I like what I saw tonight.”
With defense accounting for much of the offense, Franklin Monroe put
nine players in the books, led by Travis Feitshans with 16 and Marcus
Horner with a dozen.
On the boards, it was another stellar night for Trey Mong.
The Jets junior netted nine points but yanked down 12 rebounds, five
off the offensive glass.
“Trey is a man, not just a good player,” Myers said. “I love Trey for
who he is as a man because Trey is a leader. He does it every single
day. He’s good on the glass and he’s out there cleaning it up but it’s
like I tell the guys, I could care less what the book says about the
number and who scored what points. We’ve got plenty of guys that can
score. We need to do the little things every night and Trey does the
little thing not only on the floor but in practice and it’s contagious.”
In the end though, it’s all about defense.
“We talk everyday about how ruthless we can be and how much havoc we
can create” Myers admitted. “Even when I put my subs in, they have a
job to do and they go out and do it.”
Now 2-2 overall and 2-1 on the CCC, the Jets will travel to
Mississinawa Valley to battle the Hawks in conference action.
