Hawks get past
Arcanum in Jet consolation
Stump the
difference maker
By George Starks
PITSBURG- Mississinawa Valley coach Rodney Saintignon wanted to see
only one thing from his team.
Four quarters of basketball.
Saturday night in the consolation game with Arcanum, Saintignon got
exactly that.
Mississinawa Valley put three players in double figures led by Brandon
Byers and Carson Stump with 19, Dane Blumenstock 18 but it was Bryson
Pollic that made the difference in the final outcome.
Pollic scored just two points on the night but those points came with
1.4 seconds left in the game.
With the Hawks holding a 65-64 lead, Pollic dropped in two points from
the charity stripe giving the Hawks a 67-64 lead and the win.
“I’m proud of the kids. This was a much needed win,” Saintignon pointed
out. “We had a balanced attack and when we can get more than one player
in double figures, we can win games. Those two points by Pollic were
the two biggest of the game. We usually interchange Stump and Pollic
but Carson was having such a big game, it was hard to take him out.
Bryson has confidence in himself and he did it for us.”
The win got the Haws a third place finish in the tournament after
dropping a heartbreaker to Franklin Monroe the night before.
“It feels great to finally get a win,” said Saintignon. “It’s our
second win of the season and we’ve played a lot of tough teams.”
Even with four solid quarters, the Hawks coach pointed out why it went
down to the wire.
“We made too many silly mistakes,” said Saintignon. “Too many turnovers
and not taking care of the ball. We didn’t communicate the way we
should have and that led to some of the mistakes.”
It was a game that featured many lead changes.
Mississinawa led at the first two breaks, 22-20 and 38-34 but trailed
going into the final stanza, 49-48.
The fourth quarter saw 10 different lead changes as the Trojans were up
by as much as 62-59 with 52 seconds left to play.
The Hawks (2-6) and Trojans (1-5) will hook up again Friday night at
Mississinawa Valley in a Cross County Conference game.
