Tri-Village wins Jet Tournament
Two teams set two tournament records

PITSBURG - In 50 years of the Jet Holiday Tournament, a record was broken Saturday in the championship game between Franklin Monroe and Tri-Village.

The record was for the least amount of points scored in a game.

With the two high-powered offenses unable to generate point production, 70 points scored would result in a 41-29 Tri-Village victory, breaking a three year championship run by the Jets.

“It wasn’t pretty but I’ll take it,” said Patriots coach Josh Sagester.

By the end of the first quarter, it was apparent it was going to be a low scoring affair as Tri-Village held a 6-5 lead.

In that frame, Devin Fourman had all five of the Franklin Monroe points while Tyler Cook netted four of the Patriots six.

By the break, things had changed little as the Patriots and Jets had battled to a 16-12 score.
“Our defense was huge for us tonight,” said Sagester. “We couldn’t get anything going on offense. “

With both teams playing great defense and not able to find the bottom of the net, it may have been the play of Colton Linkous that turned the trick for Tri-Village.

Described as a baby with talent the night before by Sagester, Linkous came off the bench to net seven big points, with the biggest being a trey in the second quarter to help give the Patriots the four point lead.

Of his seven points, Linkous scored five in the second frame.

Holding a 20-19 lead after three, the Patriots started to pull away in the final stanza.

With 6:09 remaining, Tyler Cook hit in the paint then Kyle Pipenger connected on a triple and the Pats were up 25-19 with 4:31 remaining.

Tri-Village would outscore the Jets 21-10 in the frame to claim its 35th tournament title.

Pipenger led all scorers with 20 points on the night and in the process, recorded his 1,000th point as did Cook as Pipenger dished out the assist for his teammate, earning him MVP honors.

Kyle Pipenger led Tri-Village on the night with 20 points and a two game total of 47 to earn the Jet Holiday Tournament MVP award.

"When the game gets tough and other guys shut down, Kyle steps up to another level and just makes plays. He is as good as you will find in those situations. I can't think of a better way for him to achieve this historic milestone than how he did it tonight,” continued Sagester.

In a low scoring affair, the 29 scored by the Jets was also a record and FM coach Troy Meyers admitted it was not intended to be a slowed down game.

“Slowing things down is never our intention,” said Myers. “We want to come out and run and we win by defending. Tonight, we defended but we didn’t win. We just couldn’t score the ball when we wanted to. That’s the bottom line. When you hold a team like Tri-Village to 20 points in three quarters, you expect to win but, when you send a team to the foul line 20 times in a quarter, they’re going to get their points. I shoulder all the responsibility for this.”

One thing is for certain, these two schools know each other like a well-read book.

Last year, the Patriots won the regular season game but fell in the tournament to FM, 47-34.

Earlier this season, the Jets pushed the Patriots to the very end before dropping a 47-44 decision.

“We know each other way too well,” said Myers. “When it comes to these two schools, it’s knick for knack. We know what they’re doing and they know what we’re doing. We go back to work Monday and we’ll figure it all out.”

With the win, the Patriots remain undefeated with a 9-0 mark and will host Tri-County North Friday while the Jets will travel to Lehman on Friday and then will host Bradford Saturday.

In the junior varsity tournament, the Patriots topped Mississinawa Valley, 37-27.
