Versailles holds off Minster in MAC scare
By George Starks
VERSAILLES- With four minutes left in the game, Versailles coach Jackie
Stonebreaker stood; hand on hips, staring at her team in total
amazement.
Stonebreaker had watched her team lose a 34-23 third quarter lead and
was holding on to a slim 35-34 advantage.
Less than two minutes later, Stonebreaker looked to see a 36-36 tie,
with 1:44 remaining.
At that point, the Tigers went on a 10-0 run to take a 46-36 victory
over Minster.
“It didn’t seem like much of run,” said Stonebreaker in the post-game
interview. “It all came down to free throws at the end of the game and
we were under 50 percent going into the last few minutes of the game.
We struggled again tonight”
For four quarters, the Wildcats applied the pressure on defense and the
Tigers were falling victim to it, committing eight third quarter
turnovers and seven more in the final frame.
“We knew they were going to do that and we’ve got to be ready for it,”
Stonebreaker said. “Our third quarter has been a bad quarter for us and
it’s been like that all year long and we’ve got to figure out what to
do.”
With things knotted up with 1:44 left to play, the Tigers started to
come back to life.
Versailles took the lead for good when Olivia Schlater hit in the paint
giving the Tigers a 38-36 advantage.
From that point on, Versailles hit eight of nine from the line, give
them the 10 point bulge and the victory.
From the line on the night, guards Brooke Pothast and Kayla McEldowney
went six of six from the stripe to help get Versailles to a perfect
10-0 on the season.
“This was a great win against a good solid team,” said Stonebreaker.
“We have the luxury of playing in the Mac against good, solid teams. It
helps us when we are playing in the Division III sectionals.”
Versailles will be idle until Saturday, December 29 when they travel to
Ft. Loramie to face the always tough Redskins.
